Fab Freebie: Homes On Homepage

*** This giveaway is now closed. See who won below! ***

An early Christmas present (in the form of this $500 Visa gift card) has randomly chosen to come to the hands of… Mary (whose dream house would be a “big cozy log cabin out in the woods” complete with fishing pond, swimming pool, hot tub, huge whirlpool tub in her bathroom and a giant walk in closet. Her fantasy list doesn’t end there, so check out her comment for the rest). Congrats Mary!

With a URL as broad as Homes.com, there are a lot of topics you might think they cover. Because people buy homes. They decorate homes. They do home improvements. You get the idea. Well, Homes.com does cover all of those things – from all stages of the home buying process to decor and DIY. We especially enjoyed their home values and city profiles (because we’re nerds for stuff like that). But what you’ll probably enjoy the most is the chance to win a $500 Visa gift card from Homes.com this week. Yup, five hundred dolla dolla bills (in plastic form) to spend wherever you’d like for whatever stage of home ownership you’re currently enjoying. Oh yeah, and they’re also giving away a signed copy of our book over on their blog.

We love love our old house and most of it is updated but the previous owners had to stop short. Thought we would take over right when we moved in but that was 5 years ago! Could use the $ to help finish it up.

HOMES ME! We just bought our first home in October. And when we do this again we will make sure we have a separate garage, basement, something to use as the workshop for the hubs and all his toys! It was on our wishlist but the hubs compromised when I fell in love with the current house. He deserves his own space!

    Homes me!!!!!

I’ve always wanted a farm so my next house will have 20+ acres (full of flat, lush fields) and a barn. As long as the house is functional (and fixable if not my style) than I don’t care so much about that.

    HOMES ME!!!!!

Location, location, location. I’m all about a great neighborhood with parks and schools within walking distance. It’s especially important when you have kids that you don’t always have to “load up” into a vehicle to go places. I love a place where you can not only get milk and bread but can also grab a bite to eat and a birthday present without needing a car.

If I were buying today, I would look for proximity to enjoyable green space, whether it was a nearby park, or in my own backyard. Just some place where I could go sit in the sun and read a book.

    HOMES ME!

Must haves = good location, big basement for plenty of storage, and a fenced backyard. (Things you can’t fix later on!)

A “please, please, please can I have” would be a sunroom. When we were looking, I dragged my husband to several houses that weren’t quite right for us just because they had awesome sunrooms.

Husband: “Um, hon, this house only has 2 bedrooms… And part of the roof is missing…And there seems to be a family of racoons living in the kitchen.”

Me: “But look at all the lovely natural light in the SUNROOM!” (squeal)

When the time comes to look for a new house, a porch is one of the top things we’ll look for. We never realized how much we would say “This would be a great night/ morning/ afternoon to sit on a front porch”. Next time!
