Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

    GREEN ME!

I’ve been a fan of reusable shopping bags for several years now, but I’ve always been bothered by the amount of plastic produce bags we accumulated. So this spring, I bought some reusable bags for our produce and bulk items! A friend chipped in with a foldable bag I keep in my purse that’s great for using on trips to a Target, the pharmacy, and even Lowe’s. We have almost zero plastic bags now!

GREEN ME! I have recycyle bins set up and filled up regularly in my basement, I try hard to remember my cloth shopping bags, and I use green cleaning supplies/laundry detergents/soaps. Bozeman, Montana is a great little spot to find all kinds of eco-friendly finds!

I have been trying hard to incorporate more green cleaning products into my routine. Luckily I can find lots of tips right here at YHL. Glad costco sells vinegar and baking soda in bulk. :)

    GREEN ME!

Through reading this particular blog, I’ve seen the wisdom of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. So thanks, YHL, for guiding me hence. I’ve started with trying to reduce the toxins in my life. Namely, the ones I use on my body. First thing to go: Hair dye. Ergh. Tough one. I have been gray since my mid-twenties, and at shlempferty-eight years old, there is A LOT more! I quit dying in June, and we’re talking two inches of brown streaked with silver. I thought of trying some natural henna dyes, but that would elude the point of reducing. So, screw it. I call them Mother Nature’s Highlights and move on with my life.

Then I quit painting my nails. HELLO! Toes looking a little manky, but when I have a nice grow out to get rid of all the yellowing, I’m sure they’ll be fine. Thank goodness sandal season is coming to a close.

I’ve moved on to several more in that arena, started recycling, and hope to have one of those nifty little compost thingers soon.

Thanks (again), YHL, for helping me to save the Earth for my son!

I work in the commercial real estate industry, and an organization I’m involved with had their annual Development of Excellence Awards. They definitely awarded a lot of “green” buildings, but the most notable was the Sustainability Award Winner – Southface Campus in Atlanta(http://www.southface.org/). Everything from solar panels to using non-potable water for toilet flushing and irrigation to window louvers that adjust throughout the year with the sun to minimize sun (and heat) in the summer and maximize it in the winter. It’s truly inspiring!

Green me! Our community finally caught on to recycling on the big scale so we’ve really been in to it. I’ve been known to get things out of the trash that the hubs threw away without thinking! And the kids get a HUGE kick out of taking the small recycling basket in our kitchen and dumping it in the huge green trash can.

GREEN ME! At my house we’ve recently started a compost bin and small backyard garden! It is great to see our waste reduce dramatically as we turn our scraps into something for the yard. I’ve also recently switched our kitty litter to one that is corn based and biodegradable. We’ve even ditched the plastic litter box liners too. Even the kitties are happier, I swear!

We move a lot (military) and one of our great moving tips is to put small things/things you want together and not all jumbled in the bottom of the box into ziplock bags. After our last move 2 months ago I decided to keep all these bags (probably 50?) and use them for the next move instead of throwing them away each time…..

We are down to very little garbage, thanks to our city-sponsored food waste collection. We throw in our food and paper waste with our yard waste and it hits the road. We only put out actual garbage 1-2 times a month (still the small can we have is VERY far from full) for pick up now instead of every week. :)

    GREEN ME!

I really felt awful about all of the organic waste we had been throwing out, but I wasn’t able to have a traditional compost pile since I live on the 4th floor of a condo building in a large city. SO I recently took a class at a local conservatory and started my own worm compost box! I have to say… It was a big jump for me. The worms stay indoors (um, actually are in our family room!) and I was so nervous that they’d smell, I’d get bugs, or I’d kill the worms. But guess what, none of those things have happened. Instead, I’m starting to see the first signs of the rich compost that I can’t wait to use on our plants! And we have reduced the amount of waste we throw out significantly. My one worm bin cannot accommodate ALL of our organic waste, but it does take a significant amount of it.
