This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

No tips but i can say I work for a major biopharm and we recently started recycling just about everything including plastic film (thin plastic like plastic bags, bubble wrap and so forth.) It is pretty amazing to see the profile on how much we now recycle and the small amount of regular trash that goes out the door.

GREEN ME! I started making my own cleaning products using the recipes on your site. I buy big containers of dishwashing liquid and handsoap to refill my cute little bottles by my sink. Tip to those folks who say they forget to bring cloth grocery bags to the store: leave them by your front door or in your car trunk. Once you get into the habit, you won’t forget them. Now I even try to bring my own bags to stores like Target and Home Depot. We switched from using regular pest treatment to using a green treatment that is plant-based.

Our biggest green effort was unintentional. Our a/c went down in early June. We decided to try to live with out it for the summer. We just used a window unit in our bedroom when it was really hot. It wasn’t always fun, but our electric bills were really low. So it ended up being good for the environment and our wallet.

When it’s obvious a bath towel has seen better days (holes, seams falling apart, stains, etc), I cut it up into squares which I then use for rags for cleaning. They’re still soft and thick, so they’re way better than the rags you can buy in any store, plus I’m reusing something rather than tossing it. Waste not, want not!

We have been doing several things around here to “green up”. This past year we planted an organic garden in our back yard. In this garden, we’ve been companion planting (i.e. marigolds to keep weeds at bay). We’ve also been using green cleaning products (we heart meyers!).

My Chicago suburb is very encouraging about recylcling. The newsletters sent out to us always explain the reasons “why we should” and what items can / can’t be recycled. At certain times our library even accepts gym shoes.

Although I made my son’s baby food, I would buy premade stuff from the store for traveling. My son is now 15 months and off of baby food but I still use those little jars for all kinds of things: small amounts of leftovers, snacks for his baby bag, or odds and ends like paperclips. I’ve even used them for teeny tiny flower vases before!

I went vegan and joined a local CSA. If going vegan seems extreme, try eating vegan meals 1 or 2 times a week. It’s delicious, healthy and will save the world. Seriously.
