Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

    GREEN ME!

We’ve been living green-ish for a while now, but this summer I’ve noticed I can see the electric meter as I walk to the car to leave home. I’ve trained myself to go back in and turn stuff off if the meter is spinning. Now that its been a couple of months since I started, I’m in the habit of turning everything off before I leave a room.

Green me, please! We compost, grow lots of our own produce, and are saving up for solar panels. We use vinegar to clean everything and don’t use paper towels – instead we use old undies (with crotch cut out) and t-shirts as cleaning cloths. We live in South Bend, IN and are loving the emergence of MANY community gardens in our area!

Green Me – Well, since I moved to Ithaca, I have started actually noticing how un-green I was before. I turn off the water more quickly, always use a cloth bag, my son’s preschool composted snack…pretty much anything you can think of.

I re-use those nice plastic containers that many restaurants are now putting their to-go food in, they make perfect tupper ware. I also use an empty milk gallon bottle for when I fertilize my succulents, it’s the perfect 1 gallon size for me to gauge how many drops of fertilizer to use.

My husband and I just moved into our first home so we’re constantly looking for new ways to be green and to help us save money while we’re at it. A few (small) things that we currently do is sign up for paperless billing, try to unplug all appliances when not in use, and carpool whenever we can. I can’t wait to read everyone else’s comments for new ideas!

Green Me!!! We are taking small and large steps to be green. In our new home we have low-flow showers and toilets, and a programmable thermostat to keep our heating/cooling costs down, along with ceiling fans in each bedroom. We use fabric napkins, reusable water bottles, and bring our own bags to the store. We also try to shop locally and support our CSA with a weekly farm share to further encourage more sustainable/local farming.

Green Me! We’ve talked about a rain barrel for quite some time, but a good quality version that is also esthetically pleasing can be really expensive. We finally just put a big plastic garbage can at the end of the drain pipe on the corner of the house that is shielded from view by trees and brush. Now, we’re saving rain water and the “barrel” is out of view!

We’ve been reducing our paper towel use a lot by using more cloth kitchen towels. We just toss them on top of the washer when they’re dirty, and when one of us does laundry we put the kitchen towels in, too.

GREEN ME! As a teacher I am always trying to reduce waste. Recently one of my co-teachers asked her students to do a recyclable California State Mission project. Green me! We had a baby this year too, so we’re even more mindful of what products we use and wear. We started using only homemade, non-toxic cleaners in our home a few years ago, and we love it. We like to use recycled newspaper to clean glass and mirrors and recycled glass pasta sauce jars on our dryer to collect loose coins, buttons, and clothespins. We look for a use for glass containers before we recyle them, and we almost always find one! We use cloth diapers and cloth wipes for our little one, and I use organic olive oil as a makeup remover and moisturizer. We are also more mindful of buying products that use less packaging and are recyclable (i.e – meats wrapped in paper rather than on styrofoam trays, packages with less plastic, etc.). This not only cuts down on waste, but also cuts down on excess clutter. We love your blog!

Well, I live in a city that touts itself as one of the greenest around so I’m always finding interesting green stuff. Most recently though, my husband and I built three compost bins and will be downgrading our trash service to the smallest container possible. I had no idea how much could be composted and eventually turned into usable soil for our new garden beds!
