This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Me! We do the typical things we can to be green (green grocery bags, recycling everything possible, etc. but nothing too extraordinary. We are about to have our first baby and we are really thinking about going the cloth diaper route like you did.

We’ve implemented a lot of things over the years to stay greener… We use cloth napkins, don’t buy paper towels, hang laundry when it’s warm enough and buy in bulk with as little packaging as possible. The cloth napkins are actually super easy, I just throw them in with the regular laundry, and I can find them at the thrift store for about 25 cents each, usually.

GREEN ME!! My husband and I compost, always recycle and reuse, and I’ve been using baking soda and vinegar as my cleaning products for about two years now. If there’s a green version, we use it.

Looking at lots of ways to go a bit greener. All of our cleaning products are green, we use reusable shopping bags, we will be using cloth diapers once our baby is born, we use a water filter as opposed to buying bottled water, etc. etc. Little steps, but they all add up!

And for my green step, I’ve been taking the train to work. It’s especially wonderful during the hot Texas summer when gas is more expensive and the AC barely keeps out the heat when I’m driving in my car.

Our trash collector (in upstate NY) has recently begun single stream recycling–LOVE IT! We have a largish family and it was impossible to get all our recyclables to fit in the smallish plastic boxes they provided. Now it all goes in one large container that goes outside the garage next to the trash bin. Before this, I often had to skip recycling of newspaper and cardboard because I just didn’t have anywhere to put it. I’m so thankful!

We compost and use the compost in our garden, and we just had an energy assessment performed on our house – contact your utility company for more info, they are usually free and tell you where you can improve and what kind of incentives or rebates you might be eligible for if you do green upgrades around your home.

We installed a programmable thermostat in our house a few months back, which has helped our electric bill out quite a bit in the hot Texas summer months. Our area does not offer recycling (gotta love small towns away from big cities) but we still collect all our cardboard, plastic, glass and paper and add it to our respective parents’ recycling bins when we visit them in their bigger, greener cities!

We have been using cold water to wash our laundry for the past 3 years. I haven’t missed hot water at all; our clothes come out nice and clean. I would LOVE to air dry our clothes but Florida is so humid!!! :(
We use mostly cloth bags for grocery shopping (when I don’t need plasic disposable ones to clean the cat box!).
Lastly, and this is my new favorite tip, we are creating our own foaming hand soaps for each sink. All foaming hand soap is is 3/4 water (!) and 1/4 liquid soap. So you buy the foaming hand soap dispenser (or reuse a disposable one that you already have) add water, and add any liquid soap you like and voila! You are saving money buy not buying hand soap all the time, saving the environment by not buying disposable hand soap containers, and you can use ANY liquid soap to make your foaming hand soaps!

I’d love to win this FAB prize, im starting a DIY project on my guest bedroom and this would be a perfect addition to the transformation!! I recycle daily, but one of my favorite ways to recycle is to reuse all old cloths and turn them into a great creation, like a quilt or letters or cute patterns on new shirts.

I try to reuse plastic sandwich bags by washing them and hanging them to dry on the refrigerator with a magnet. I’m able to use them at least 3 times before throwing them away.
