Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Bonus answer: I’ve started greening up my apartment by using green cleaning products like Mrs. Meyers and Method. On another note, I also have made a fairly huge attempt to use hair and beauty prducts that are not tested on animals. That has been very important to me.

Green Me! My biggest tip is to really think about what you’re buying. Even so-called ‘green products’ aren’t really environmentally friendly unless we really need them. The best bet is to re-use what you can and make do rather than buying all the time.

GREEN ME! I recently learned of the magical cleaning powers of vinegar and baking soda! Cheap, GREEN and safe to use around my dog!

I’m also making reuseable grocery bags for my sisters this year as part of their Christmas gifts. If all four of us use them every time we shop, we’re sure to save a lot of plastic bags from the landfill!

    GREEN ME!

We just moved out of a 1-bedroom apartment and into a home, which we quickly equipped with a washer and dryer. After about a month I decided that instead of keeping the dryer on the “normal” setting all the time, I could use the “eco normal” setting with most loads. Then I also realized that I could sometimesput two wash loads in the dryer at a time. . .last week when we got our energy bill, my husband excitedly informed me that it was almost $30 less than last month! My greening efforts have also been friendly to our bank account.

GREEN ME. We have implemented almost total home automation which means when we leave we can hit one button and the house basically turns off and sets the A/C up. It has saved us a lot in energy bills which in turn is also being grene by not leaving things on ever. We also compost and recycle. :)

I always have at least three reusable bags in my purse for unexpected trips to the grocery (or shoe!) store. I find they come in handy for other shopping excursions ranging from lunch purchases (no plastic or paper bag necessary) to drug store runs. And it helps me keep those nasty BPA-laden receipts from sneaking into my bags!

Aside from cloth diapering our baby, my husband and I splurged on a GE high efficiency washer and dryer to help us save water. We also went out and bought the same dual-flush system we saw here, and it works divinely! Additionally, we make it a point to only turn lights on in the house if the sun has started to set! Yay planet earth!

My husband and I make our own nut butter (peanut, almond and walnut!) and jelly- then we reuse the same glass mason jars to store it in. No buying and throwing away plastic containers!

Its a small step that goes towards saving my two favorite types of green, the planet and our money :)
