This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

We recycle everything that we can, to the point of almost not needing our garbage bin. We do that by reusing bags, not buying products with a lot of packaging, and buying fresh foods when possible.

I’m trying to cut down on our collection (we have a drawer in our kitchen stuffed with them) by using the reusable totes, but I’m still getting into the swing of remembering them when I go shopping.

We live in toast, humid North Texas, where it likes to stay above 100 degrees for months and months! Our AC unit died last year and we used the tax incentive to buy an energy efficient unit (much nicer than we would have without the tax break!). Now that our unit is more efficient, we’ve started turning the AC up to 80-85 during the day and using it mostly after 5 when we get home.

I try to be green by buying used clothes/accessories/furniture as often as possible. We also try to reuse everything and repurpose as often as we can. We have our own garden and I try to use greener products in our home.

My favorite easy green thing has been drastically reducing my paper towel consumption. Cloths are just as handy. Just keep a stack under the sink and away you go. I still keep a roll of paper towels around for emergencies, but one roll easily lasts 2-3 months!

I don’t have any special useful tips, but this year we started a garden! It was amazingly easy to grow chemical-free veggies and fruits. I was super-skeptical about this undertaking, but I don’t think we’ll ever go back to eating supermarket tomatoes in the summer. And I feel extra eco-friendly to boot!

I have a long list of things I do in my effort to be green :) I use green cleaning supplies like Mrs. Meyers and simple things like vinegar and water. I also recycle like a crazy person. Everything is designated in it’s spots, I also utilize recycling events in our area and do my best to re-use things and produce as little trash as possible. I also have a worm bin to compost and have an organic garden in my front yard. We also eat as much organic fruits and vegetables, where it applies, as possible and only eat organic meat and that’s on the rarity that we do eat meat. Those are just a few things :)

We have cleared out my cabinets of any plastic non-BPA free containers and cups and started buying glass containers. The result – we feel so much better about it! I also love to collect the recycled shopping bags and am so proud to bring them with me on all my shopping expeditions! Seventh Generation has some great products to use on the quick, especially their dishwashing detergents. I’ve also started to “upcycle” my husbands old work shirts and am using the fabric to sew up some quick baby clothes (little sun dresses) for our nieces and some cute pillow cases (think pinstripes and yes he has pink!)

Vinegar water is the most amazing cleaning agent ever! And we have gotten endless amounts of raspberries and peaches this year. We believe we can thank are 3 adorable dogs since we don’t use commercial fertilizer.

I’ve been using a solution of vinegar, water, and a bit of (7th gen) dish soap for a few years now to do almost all of my household cleaning. It works like a charm to get things clean, and I don’t have to deal with the icky smell of chemical cleansers, and their potential dangers. Not to mention how much cheaper it is!

I’ve recently begun incorporating organic fruits/veggies on my shopping list. They are pricier, but if I watch the sales and buy them when they are cheaper it doesn’t make as much of a dent on the wallet! I’m starting out by focusing on organic fruits and veggies that are consumed with the skin/peel on, since that seems to make sense to me. I’m hoping that eventually I’ll be in a position to buy all-organic, but for now this is a good start!
