This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Like many others, we use re-usable grocery sacks instead of plastic, vinegar, lemons, and baking soda for cleaning, and we are a no paper towels kind of family.

I like to use baking soda in a bowl of water to clean the microwave. Just turn on the microwave for a couple of minutes and wipe clean!

GREEN ME! We do the usual like using fabric bags instead of plastic, recycle ( a lot) and we walk where ever we can. I try not to buy things we really don’t need and shop second hand as often as possible. It is good for the earth and saves us money.

My fiance’s building, sadly, does not collect recycling so we gather our recyclables and take them to the nearest facility. We use Seventh Generation products at home and shop with reusable bags. For our wedding, we are trying to incorporate Green materials and reuse/re-purpose what we can – Some examples – For our guests welcome bags we’re using 100% recycled bags and tissue and at the ceremony we have 100% recycled napkins at our bar. I’ve purchased items from past Brides so that the items can be reused – I plan to sell a lot of what I’ve used afterwards too!

I usually just have toast for breakfast and realized that it’s unnecessary to fully wash my plate every day. I just rinse off the crumbs and put it in my drying rack for the next day, then at the end of the week, I throw it into the dishwasher.

The easiest way that my husband and I have made our house a little more green is by changing all of our light bulbs to the energy efficient light bulbs. They are good for the environment and they cut your electricity bill in half!

As far as being green goes, I live in Northern California near Chico (home of the Klean Kanteen) so we’re fairly green around here. Butte College, the feeder community college to Chico State, is very green. We produce a large percentage of our own energy, have biodegradable cups/plates/utensils, etc. Being green just kinda goes along with going to school here.

We use CFLs, fabric bags, microcloths, and rechargable batteries. I also make all our own cleaning products.
About 5 years ago we decided to take tiny steps to become more eco-friendly. Each year, we pick one environmentally friendly thing to adopt and, eventually, it becomes a habit. This “small steps” approach has worked really, really well for us.

I recently made my own sandwich wrappers so I wouldn’t have to constantly be toting around bulky tupperware or keep tossing plastic/aluminum wrap away. Some inexpensive oil cloth, velcro and less than 30 min on the sewing machine did the job perfectly! And they are so cute looking. Not a bad way to go green and chic!

Since reading your blog my husband and I have started to make the switch to organic starting with homemade cleaners, going paperless( from paper towels to bills), and now are teaching friends and family what we are learning! I’ve been trying to ween off of paper towels. I have a basket of “shop towels” in the kitchen, and a cloth bag hanging from a doorknob in the kitchen. Clean ones removed from basket and used, then when too soiled (or soiled with something I don’t want to contaminate countertops with) goes into cloth bag to be washed. Haven’t completely broken the habit yet, but it’s a great start!

We use natural cleaning products, compost, garden, and our favorite – participate in our local nature center. We just had a nice trip to the San Francisco area and loved all the green choices many restaurants and fun local businesses offered!
