Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

    Green Me!

My mom taught me one of the best green tips ever as a kid…using newspaper to clean glass. She learned it when she worked cleaning the glass cases in a china shop when she was in college. It actually cleans better than paper towels! I was in college myself before I realized most people DON’T use newspaper to clean glass….I thought everyone did!

    GREEN ME!

Inspired by YHL, lately I’ve been trying to convert to some greener ways. I’m no where near where I want to be, but I’ve switched to eco friendly laundry detergent and household cleaners, among a few other measures. I’m still trying to get into the routine of going the green route instead of falling back on my regular (non-green) ways. I love this company, by the way, I looked on their website and they have so many great things!!

We’re infants in the green world, we use fabric bags for shopping and use vineagar and water for nearly all our cleaning. We don’t use our AC in the summer?

I use reusable shopping bags and recycle everything my city’s recycling program allows us. I also cut up my family’s worn out or outgrown T shirts to make reusable cleaning and dusting cloths.

The only tip I can think of that not everyone and their mom may know is that metal bottle caps are recyclable! I didn’t know this until recently and would just trash them. Now they go into the bin with the cans and plastics!

I live in LA and there are always people going through our trash to salvage recyclables, my fiancee and I decided to save our recyclables for a local woman and her family. We’re all green in the process and she is able to make some green ($$). Yay humanity!

I am a huge advocate for recycling at my work. In fact from our day camps we recycle juice pouches with Terracycle who turns the juice pouches into cool products like bags and pencil cases.

I think the biggest thing I’m working on right now to stay green (I live in an apartment building in Manhattan, just about the most efficient place you can live – no car, no A/C, and we have radiator system heating!) is that I’m fixing my radiator! It seems like a small thing, but it will make a difference!

We have a little pot full of herbs on our patio now, and my husband is creating a raised garden for me! I’m so excited. We recycle, don’t use toxic pesticides/herbicides on our lawn and plants, and I gave all of my Teflon non-stick cookware to goodwill and replaced it with stainless steel and cast iron. All my plastic food storage containers went in the recycling and I replaced those with Pyrex glass ones. No more chemicals in my kitchen!! And I try to get gently used items instead of new whenever I can.

GREEN ME because I check local recycling rules (and follow signage on public bins) to ensure that I do not inadvertently contaminate a whole load of recycling. Encourage your local representatives to institute single stream recycling; the easier it is for people to recycle, the more they will!

Reusable BPA free water bottle to stay hydrated

I’ve been taking 2-3 minute showers since camp in the 5th grade. Consider turning the water off to soap up, then back on again to rinse off.

We try to make green and sustainable choices as much as we can. Our newest opportunity is how we diaper our newborn. We are using Seventh Generation diapers until he is big enough to fit into his Flip brand cloth diapers. Better for his delicate skin, and better for the earth.
