This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

GREEN ME! Check out the Scrap Exchange in Durham, NC – we created a one-time scrap exchange art day to use all those random bottle caps and styrofoam peanuts and bread bag ties at our kids’ school – they love it and we can find a use for all those random things we’d normally throw away.

GREEN ME! My EASY green tip is reducing (or cutting out completely) your usage of grocery and plastic bags in general. I even steer clear of the paper ones just to save a little more… someone else can use them!
I even have stopped using bags at restaraunts… im am constantly at subway. Why waste the little plastic bag there?? And even when the waitress brings your to-go box… forgo the bag – PLEASE! Its such a waste!
You can EASILY cut back and the more you do… the more other people will too. My husband, mother, some friends, even the woman in line behind me said she was inspired as i opted to load a few small items into my purse :)

GREEN ME!! I live out in the country–we do not have recycling pick up. I keep large boxes in the back of my suv to store my recyclables until I can make a trip 1x a month to the nearest center an hour away. I’m also reusing shopping bags. I hope to start composting soon!

Green Me — I have always hated how the plastic pages accumulate in my kitchen. I often ask for no bags at the store if it is only one or two items. One of the reasons I like Sam’s club is because they don’t bag their items. I have the reusuable grocery bags, but can’t seem to get the hang of remembering to take them in store with me.

One of my recent green adaptations was to create a clothesline on my bathroom ceiling (I live in a tiny military house with tile walls!). I hung little hooks and hung clothesline in parrelell lines, and leave the little wooden pins up. I keep the extra pins in a recycled Mason jar, and it looks very cute and homey. I save energy, create less wear and tear on my clothing and it ended up being cute, without damaging the tile :)

I’ve been buying stuff at thrift stores and Goodwill for YEARS, and I’m finally convincing my friends it’s the cool thing to do. Not only is it better for the planet, but it’s better for your wallet. Hubsey and I also recently switched to Strut Your Shine natural cleaner and I love it. No more watery eyes and sneezing when I clean! Oh, and I switched to organic nail polish! It lasts about 900 times longer than the regular stuff, so I don’t think I’ll ever go back.

GREEN ME! It’s minor, but I use reusable bags and refuse plastic bags at ALL stores – convenience, clothing, craft, etc. Seems people only do this at grocery stores. That and I’m slowly finding ways to store food without using resealable bags to cut down on waste.

I LOVE this stuff! Green me please! The only real green tip I have is to start a compost pile. You don’t need to buy a huge composter for your backyard, you can just section off a bit of garden space, keep a container on the kitchen counter for any misc. carrot tops, onion peals, etc. and keep turning and mixing your outside pile. It’s super easy and great fertilizer for your garden the next summer!

We recycle all of our glossy magazines by depositing them in a big dumpster at our local Ronald McDonald House. The organization gets money back for each ton of glossy paper they recycle. Over $74,000 has been raised for the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, PA through this program since 2004!

My favorite and simplest 2 Green changes we have made are using recyclable snack bags- I sew so I make them, but you can buy them- saw some in Hip to be Round at Carytown in Richmond, and using cloth napkins, towels, etc instead of paper products to clean the kitchen, for cooking, etc. Easy to wash and much cuter, softer patterns for my family.

I am a composting fool! My husband is a home brewer and the grain left over from his brewing sessions does wonders in the compost bin. provided!

We’re big on reusing in this household. This year we started buying our milk from a farm (reusable glass jars for that), canning, and making our own bread (no more plastic bread bags). For the things we do buy, I buy in bulk (less waste), and look for recycled materials that I can re-purpose (many make great planters for my seedlings in the early spring!).

“GREEN ME” – And I haven’t tried it yet (tomorrow I will be) Instead of using harsh chemicals to clean your oven mix 2 cups of Tang (orange drink mix) with 1 cup hot water – paint your oven with it, let sit 1/2 hour then go back and wipe it off. The citric acid is supposed to cut through all the grease and spills.

Green ME! I’m a teacher, and I just got a club I advise to go around the school collecting cans & bottles to recycle, and then donate the money collected to an animal shelter. The kids couldn’t believe that you could put the bottles in a machine and the machine would give you money! Great lesson!
