Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Trying to make green and animal friendly choices when I can… I’ve reformed my household cleaning and toiletry products to products that haven’t been tested on animals. Make sure and do your research. Some companies like St Ives cary animal friendly products but don’t always advertise on the labels. Other labels will use words like “all natural” but really do test on animals. If you email any company from thier website asking for their animal testing policy, it is fairly easy to figure out if they meet your critera or not.

We have started over the past year doing some really simple changes in our lifestyle to be more green:

    1) Using re-usable bags while shoping
    2) Not using re-usable containers for our lunches instead of ziploc bags
    3) Recycling as much as we can
    4) Switching to plant based cleaners for the house

I’ve been committed to the environment since I got my first job out of college (at Walt Disney World). Even then, in the early 90’s, they took lots of steps to ensure enviornmentality, and it carried over into our home life.

I’ve used cloth diapers on two of my three children, we have a chemical free home and lawn, we compost, recycle, limit packaging, do not use plastic, and the list goes on and on. Our children even go to an environmental school here in the Atlanta area, where the children learn about recycling and composting, and live it every day.

I don’t have an spectacular tips. I guess my tip is just to buck up and implement what you already know to do. Recycle, compost, rain barrels, drive less, turn off lights, use CFL, bring your own bags, choose low/no packaging items, etc. etc. etc. I always smack my forehead when I finally implement something I have known to do for a while. Why didn’t I do this sooner?

My husband is leading the charge in making us more eco by using natural solutions to pest and weed control in our landscaping. I am loving my Bobble- a reusable water bottle that has it’s own built in filter and replaces up to 300 water bottles. And after about 300 drinks, you can just replace the filter…BONUS!!!

Also we are starting to compost, 1.) for the earth, and 2.) so we can have some awesome organic soil for next spring! When I travel for work I ask the hotel if they have a green program. At the Westin, you can sign up for it when you check in. They won’t wash your towels, etc. during your stay (saving energy) and in exchange you get a food or points voucher.

Composting like mad this year, and I can’t believe what an impact it has had on the volume of regular trash we put to the curb each week. It is amazing how little we have (we are already good recyclers)! Plus, this great compost has done wonders for the vegetable and flower gardens.

We also just switched to (mostly) green cleaning products. (Sorry, can’t find anything better than Tide for the smelly-yucky-funky-biohazardous running gear…)

We’ve recently purchased our first home (love to admitt your blog has become my new daily addiction)!!…So we’ve been frugal with everything lately….Craigslist for new furniture, Eco green paint when painting (in all the rooms). We’ve been using recycled cloth bags for a while now. We are happy to say we use them everywhere from the food store to even the mall! When we do take home plastic bags, we reuse them as liners in the W/C trash, or wrap our rollers & brushes in them over night so we don’t waste paint or ruin our tools!

My very simple (and kinda boring) green tip is to just buy less stuff. Easier said than done. I am trying to be content with what I have, and find ways to repurpose and reuse items I already own. It’s a very small step, but I’ve found it’s good for my soul as well as the planet. It forces me to get creative, and reflect on all I have and be grateful.

    GREEN ME!

    Where to start…

We make our own dog and cat food from local produce, eggs, and chicken we buy from the Farmer’s Market.
We make our own laundry detergent.
We have never used a dryer and instead hang our laundry up all over the crown moulding and empty closets in our apartment (no backyard to hang anything in).
When my car died over one year ago I switched to riding my bike to work (15-miles round-trip) and taking the bus in the winter.
We purchase all furniture/decor/cookware/clothing/etc. from Goodwill and other thrift stores.
We only use reusable water bottles, recycle everything possible; we do not use paper towels or tissues (we use reusable, washable rags & handkerchiefs).
Also, I work for Sunlight Solar, a solar panel installation company.

We always turn off the lights when certain rooms are not in use, and make it a habit to unplug the toaster oven and space heater when not in use.
We avoid using paper plates. We opt for tupperware to store things over ziploc bags also, since ziploc bags can’t be re-used after washing like tupperware can. Another tip for recycling is to make it more convenient for yourself, so you’ll always do it. Buy attractive functional stacking bins for recycling that are placed in the house in a high traffic area (i.e. under the sink, in the mudroom, in the laundry room, or garage) so that it’ll be easy to sort and just throw the plastics or newspapers in the bins. Then when garbage day comes, you just have to take it to the real recycling containers outside.

Our ‘green’ move was to replace over 1000 sq feet of our backyard with native grasses and wildflowers. Less mowing, thus less gas consumption. Less water usage. More food for wildlife, etc. If this project is a success we plan to increase the size of our native grass prairie in the coming years.

As a musician, I embarked on an international tour called the Green Light Tour, where we planted a tree in every city we stopped at on tour, as well as gave out ‘enviro-prizes’ to fans and audience members. We were endorsed by the Arbor Day Foundation, Sierra Club, U-Haul, and the Girl Scouts of America.

Because our tour was so successful, we spun off another tour called the Green Letter Tour, where we researched city officials in every city we stopped in and together with audience members, wrote letters to them offering suggestions and requests on how to ‘greenify’ each community.

Not only was it a ton of fun, but really rewarding!
