Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    I don’t have an iPhone, but my husband has downloaded an app called StitchMinder to help me with knitting patterns. Unfortunately, there is little time for me to use it since he’s obsessed with his phone, but it was a nice thought!

    I would love an app that would allow me to enter in my grocery list and have the list automatically sent to a grocery story (Ukrops/Kroger/Ellwood…based on what I was looking for) where the items would be collected by a store employee and all I would have to do is head to the store at the scheduled pick-up time and my grocery shopping would be COMPLETE!!

    I love my facebook app. It gets used the most. I also use my Slacker Radio app at least once a day. It’s just like Pandora but has pre-built stations that you can customize. FREE apps are the best!

    TOUCH ME!!!! What a great giveaway! I absolutely love Bento for my macbook and would love to have an iTouch to use it on…would be so helpful when I find myself in Lowes without the scrap of paper I wrote my measurements/color choices/shopping lists for my latest project on!

    One of my favorite apps is FML. It’s funny stories about stuff. Shazam is another great one. It tags songs with artist and title! Postcard Express ($1.99) lets you take a picture and send a virtula postcard! Urbanspoon, restaurants. There are reviews, sometimes menues, and can help you figure out where to eat. Some games= sheep launcher, blowfish poppers, removem. Maybe you will like some of these! Touch me!

    I just started using Evernote and I’m liking it. It has a firefox add-on that you can use to clip part of a webpage. I’ve been using it to clip recipes and then I don’t have to print them out and I can look up the ingredients in the store.

    I’m hoping for the new Barns & Nobel eReader, the Nook, for Christmas, so if I had a Touch I would download the app to let me read my e-books on it (which seems redundant, but I would be sharing the eReader with the hubs, so it would be handy). I originally wanted an Amazon Kindle eReader, but the Nook just sounds a smidge better in a few ways, so I’ve switched my allegiance and my wish list!! Sorry, Amazon. I still love you. Can you ever forgive me?

    Two apps I love:

    Klick – Uploads your pics to Flickr using geotargetting on a map. Great to visually share all the great places you visited during a vacation!

    OV Calendar – helps you keep track of those important days if you’re looking to add a bambino to the fam (What to Expect is a good pregnancy tracker once you’re there).

    BONUS QUESTION: My favorite app would be a shopping list ap that you could plug into your fridge and it would create a shopping list instantly. AND THEN, when you go to the store, you could just plug in your iPod at the front of the store and it/someone would do the shopping for you! TA DA!

    I don’t have an iPhone either, but I get a kick out of my friends obsession with the Star War’s light saber app. I also appreciate the app that chooses a restaruant for you by shaking the phone.
