Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    I use SwedeShop and love it. It makes shopping at Ikea so much easier.

    I’d like an app that would clean my house for me, though.

    My favorite iPhone app is the Evernote app, which you’ve already mentioned–but a close second is the Mint.com app. Fabulous for keeping track of your budget on the go!

    Touch me! I don’t have an iPhone, so this probably already exists, but I would love an app that does my meal planning for me. I hate going through my cupboards and figuring out what dinner is going to be for the week!

    TOUCH ME.
    Let’s see….I would create an app that drives the car for me while I’m on my hour-long commute each morning. This would leave my hands free so I could read my mail, do my nails, etc. Could it do my grocery shopping, too?

    I don’t have an iPhone, but my boyfriend has the T-Mobile version, the MyTouch. My favorite app for his phone is the game Zilch. Free, of course. There might be an iPhone version!

    haha. Well, let’s see since I am iphone-less and itouch-less I’m not really sure of all the apps out there but I would love something to tell me what to cook for dinner each night…is there an app for that? ; )

    I don’t have an I-phone, although my lover does – and the app that drives me most nuts is the “flashlight” app – really? a Flashlight? it’s simply a white screen. Too funny what they think of!

    I would love to have an event planner/organizer app. I’m sure there already are tons out there but I don’t have a touch or iphone so I don’t even look…anyway, I’d love to have something I can enter events into, and get reminders for how to prepare (for example: “marinate beef for Thursday’s dinner party”, or “pick out dress for Saturday’s girl’s brunch”). I’m so busy with working full time and making sure my toddler lives the best life that I often find myself scrambling to find the time/energy to put out to others (besides stopping at the store for premade cookies instead of bringing a good dish to a potluck).

    TOUCH ME!

    I have an iPhone and I absolutely love it for everything. My favorite app that it came with is the Google Maps, since I have a horrible sense of direction. I also love the free Yelp app to find a good store or restaurant wherever I am. And my favorite app at the moment is 2 Across, which allows me to do crosswords on the iPhone from some major newspapers around the world.

    I’d love to get an iTouch for my teenage son, who is dying for one but I can’t afford it. Thanks!

    I don’t have an IPhone or an Ipod touch, but I would love an app that would finish my grad school applications for me including finishing 3 different versions of my resume, 2 different letters of intent, and send out all my reference forms. I need more hours in the day!

    TOUCH ME!!! I don’t even have a real cell phone (only one of those pay as you go) so this may be too fancy for little ole me but I want that IKEA app because at this point I think I have accumulated about a hundred tiny golf pencils in my purse.

    Although I don’t own an iphone, my favorite app WILL be the Feather Report. It’s an app that gives you wardrobe choices based on Location, weather, and body shape. Love the concept!
