Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    TOUCH ME

    I’ve been salivating over the iphone and ipod touch. Since I don’t have either I’m not too up on the apps. I think an app that could be fantastic would be one that helped with grocery shopping. Something that has not only your list but a map of your grocery store to help you make it out quickly and without impulse purchases brought on by looking around when you don’t know exactly what aisle you need. Or maybe an app that you plug in what food you already has and then it tells you what foods can be made without you having to get more groceries.

    It may seem simple, but I would really like a pedometer on my iTouch. If I was already going to carry it with me for all of the other great gadgets it offers, I might as well streamline!

    My favorite app is the calculator which I use at the grocery store. I would like for it to be upgraded though into an adding machine style calculator so you can see what you have added to that point…….I always miss one or two items or lose my place. In other words, I would like it further idiot proofed for me :)

    My fav app would be one that I can use to find a specific item (say, a bedding ste that I’ve been lusting after) and have it scan the net based on price/availability (in stock please) and closest location to where I am and BOOM – show me the item and where I should go to get the best deal. There is probably an app like that for an Iphone already – but no Iphone for me :(

    I’d love to have an app that would store recipes and then, when you select which ones you’d use for Thanksgiving dinner, it would create a cooking plan based upon their cook-times and cooling times.

    Touch ME! I like the one that picks a restaurant that you should eat at when you don’t know where to go… I don’t have an iPod touch but I friend of mine does, and I think that would come in very handy :)

    My favorite IPhone App is the Woot App. It gives you daily deals from Woot.com. Check it out! It’s awesome!

    Touch me! Sometimes it feels like I’m cooking the same meals week to week. I’d like an app that you could enter your favorite meals and it would help you come up with a monthly planner, with some new dinner ideas.

    I don’t have an iphone … but an app that tallies groceries as you go would be ideal. :) We always seem to go over our budget … (of course putting back the bag of treats we pick up might be the reason for that too) :)

    My miracle app would be to know how to use the Iphone with the touch of one app! My two teenage daughters are bugging to get all three of us Iphones and frankly after being out of touch on a business trip and not able to respond to e-mail because I couldn’t find a computer, I have to admit they are RIGHT! Just don’t tell them…please!

    Touch Me! I think there’s an app that finds the nearest bathroom for you, then rates how clean it is. Unbelievable!

    ToUcH mE!!! My dream app would give a constant reading of the temperature outside so I could check it in the morning instead of dressing like an eskimo (I’m always cold when I wake up. Then I go outside and find out it’s not as cold as I thought :) and start peeling off layers.

    I don’t have an ipod touch/iphone though I have been drooling over the ipod touch for a while. I’d definitely use it for to-do lists, GPS (I can get lost in a box), their e-books, music, etc.

    TOUCH ME! This post couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I’m looking into counter surfaces for a breakfast bar window between dining room & kitchen. Have had big hole in wall for a while now; so will check it out.

    As far as iphone aps – check these out:
    Photo fun:
    TiltShiftGen (great for city views), ColorSplash (for editing photos to show one element in color & rest in black & white)
    Live video streaming: qik
    Accessing syncing files: drobbox
    INformation: BuzzVoice (reads RSS feeds/news to you for multi-tasking
    Taking pictures: ProCamera (zoom,target, and more…)
    GTD Getting Things Done: Nozbe – works great with Evernote

    My app would be able to scan all of the food that I currently have in the cubard– then as I use the food we’d scan it under “used.” Then I the app could put togethe recipes for dinner using only things that we alread have in our house.

    Touch Me! Puuullllease!
    I don’t have an iphone or an itouch (I’ve been salavating for one though), but I heard of an app that not only lets you know of available bathrooms in the area (for when you can’t hold it anymore), but rates them by cleanliness. Sounds like a must have to me!
