Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    Dream app would make the iPhone like the remote control in the movie “Click.” I feel that I’ve learned from Adam Sandler’s mistakes and I can use such an app responsibly.

    I don’t have an iphone but like many others apps that meal plan, price compare and manage money sound great to me. I would also like a work out app – like a little personal trainer who manages my music, calorie intake and workout routines.

    I don’t even have an iPhone yet, but I’m thinking of getting one. My top apps will probably be some kind of Twitter app and (drumroll) Evernote! I love my ‘clip to evernote’ bookmarklet and use it for decorating ideas that I find online.

    Touch me! My dream app would give me a 30 minute (or less) recipe each day and a shopping list so I can get a healthy dinner on the table each night for the kids.

    Touch Me!! How awesome! I don’t have any apps :( but I would dig the pandora app as I use pandora already! Or maybe an app that kept track of my favorite bands–when they are touring/releasing albums, etc.

    I don’t have an iPhone, alas, nor an iPod of any kind (so clearly I deserve to win, haha). I’m guessing my favorite app would be something organizational, though. Maybe something that would let me put in little notes and then organize them by topic, or automatically generate to-do lists or something.

    I would definitely make an app to get the groceries…. that is my LEAST favorite chore EVER! If there is a way, i will totally make it happen once I get my hands on that thing!!

    I’m cellularly challenged, so I have an ancient phone with 0 apps. My miracle app, however, would be somewhat of a coupon genius – find and download all the coupons for stuff we use and alert me when I’m checking out to actually give them to the cashier!

    My favorite apps are the ones I have for tipping, budgeting, etc. I have several of them. I also love urban spoon and others that tell me about cool places to eat, etc in my area!

    I’ve got an iphone, and I love it. But my husband really wants a touch, and that would save us some dough! To turn around and spend on our house, with ideas from YHL of course. Best app for me though is either the camera bag or the postman. Camerabag is awesome because you can edit your photos into really cool tints and styles. Postman is awesome for sharing pics that you’ve edited with camerabag!

    I currently own nothing that uses apps, so I don’t know what is/isn’t possible… I’d like something that I could use to keep track of what’s in my freezer at any given time… sigh.

    I love Twitterific and Lose It! Zenbe is great too for keeping track of all your tasks, especially since you can share it with others (shopping list with your roommate or SO).
