Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    Touch me! I don’t have an iphone or ipod touch (yet!), but I think a great app for me would be something that would help me grocery shop. So if I decide to make chili for dinner, it would already create a grocery list for me and I could check off things if I had them already…and just pick up whatever else is on the list!

    My favorite app is Pandora. I like it online, but it’s even better on mobile. I love creating new channels on the fly to suit my mood.

    Touch MEEEEEEEEE!!! I would adore an app that would keep track of everything I want to buy but refuse to pay full price for. Then, when it goes on sale, it would tell me and I could then buy it guilt-free:)

    I don’t have an iphone but I believe there is an app that you plug in the ingredients that you have in your pantry and it tells you a recipe you can make and shows you how to make it.

    Touch me! What a crazy week! So glad I made it in time! I would LOVE an iPod Touch! I have no idea what my favorite app would be … I’m clueless as I don’t have one but I would LOVE to find out and it’s on my Christmas wish list! :)

    I am creating my own miracle app. I think it would be fabulous if there was an app that was an instant coupon, for anything. I know they have a barcode app for your grocery store scan cards, etc. But my miracle app would be like a barcode coupon, for essentially any item. Need a new TV…woah, look at there, 15% off. Would you love to grill steaks tonight? They just happen to be BOGO. Do you really like that pillow for your couch? $5 off today! Or, Sherry, just for you BOGO white ceramic animals. :)

    I don’t have an iphone and I don’t really know much about the apps. But it would be cool if you could put in some ingredients you had in your pantry and fridge and it would give you recipe ideas for meals. Do they have that?

    Touch Me!

    My two favorite iPod touch apps: Byline is a news reader that syncs with a Google Reader account. It downloads the whole Web page associated with any feed, which is great for reading on an iPod touch that might not always be in range of WiFi. That’s less important on an iPhone, since you’re almost always online, but still convenient for long flights, etc. Second is Things, which is a fantastic to-do manager. These two apps aren’t free, but they’re cheap, and worth every penny!

    I would love an app that tells me what clean clothes are available and possible outfit combinations from that, as well as remembering what I wore recently so that I don’t repeat pieces/outfits too soon.

    TOUCH ME!!

    I have not upgraded to the iPhone yet. I contemplated it but I’m too loyal to my carrier. Though they did tell me that they’re set to kick off an iPhone for them w/Apple in 2011. Then I’ll be an iPhone junkie like everyone else.
    But I do love my 5th generation iPod, so I’d be very excited for an upgrade to the touch!!

    I don’t have a Touch or iPhone, but the app I would love to have most? Epicurious and other recipe sites online! I’m always dragging my laptop into the kitchen- having a Touch would save so much space, and work so much better!

    TOUCH ME! I would love a Mom app. She would be Me! She could clean, cook dinner, pick the kids up from school, whatever I needed her to do. I just get to do the good stuff. That might be dinner soem days – but not every day!

    I dont have an iphone, but my sister does… and my favorite app that she has is the garage sale finder app…
    put in your address, and it mapquest the location of the nearest garage sales (with cute little push pins).. then readjusts more garage sales as you are driving around from sale to sale.
    LRRVE it! we have found many sales especially during the fall months when its not the typical saleing time!
    Yeeah!
