Fab Freebie: I Touch My Surface

No, the title of this week’s freebie isn’t meant to be perverse. It’s just the clearest way to identify the DuPont giveaway that has already popped up on some of our favorite blogs. And now it’s here on YHL (insert party kazoo sound effect here). Ladies and gents, we present to you: the DuPont iPod Touch giveaway. That’s right, DuPont’s gonna hook one of you up with a free iPod Touch. Monday just got a little better, eh?

DuPont recently launched a new free iPhone and iPod Touch app called mySurface that’s designed to help you pick a countertop from within their Corian and Zodiaq line of products. The fun interface would’ve been great back when we were redoing our kitchen, if nothing else just to give us a sense of how many options were out there. So even though technology’s a bit too late for our renovation, we’re still getting great bathroom inspiration ideas from mySurface’s photo gallery:

DuPont was even kind enough to hook us up with our own iPod Touch (now I’m almost as cool as my iPhone toting wife) to check it out and dig up some other helpful DIY apps to share with you guys. So here are the other home-improvement related apps that we’re digging:

We’ve been having lots of fun with Benjamin Moore’s ColorCapture app (also free). Using uploaded photos (or pics snapped with the iPhone’s camera) you find paint colors and color schemes to coordinate with your favorite fabric, painting or – well – photo of your dog on the beach. And though we haven’t used it yet, the 99-cent SwedeShop app is the unofficial Ikea organizer for the iPhone. So you can forget the golf pencil on your next trip- plus it automatically tallies your budget as you go.

We also got lots of tips about keeping notes and lists on your iPhone back on this post, so we’ve started to use Evernote (again, free). It’s like the Voice Memo and Notes tools that come already loaded on the iPod, but a bit more organized. Linked to an account on evernote.com, you can keep voice, text, photo and screen grab notes that can be labeled with tags, sorted by geo-tags and easily searched. We’ve also been enjoying craigsphone, the app version of craigslist. Nothing new in terms of content, but hunting for real estate, browsing local yard sales and perusing used furniture in need of a new home is almost easier on the iPod than the real web site. The app is free, but it certainly could end up costing us more as we discover new steals.

    “TOUCH ME” Please. I don’t have an iphone but if it did I would use some calendar function that would let me keep up with all my appointment dates. I use the old write in calendar and sometimes the 2 year old moves it (hide & seek )and mommy has missed appointments. Please bring me up to date :)

    I don’t have an iPhone but my nephew has one and I love the shazaam app. I think that is what it is called, where when you hear a song on the radio or some random place it tells you the information about the artist.
    I love your blog by the way…so many awesome tips!

    I’ll switch up the bonus question and tell you my least favorite app – I Fart. Who wants to hear farting sounds?! But millions of people find the humor there, I just think it is plain silly!

    The finance has a iphone and I hope to get one in the near future!

    My fav applications on his phone:
    1. Traffic App: Its local to WA (so you don’t need this one)
    2. Opentable
    3. Whrrl
    4. Trism (game)
    5. Ski Report App- local to WA again (we use this during ski season to see which mountain has better ski conditions :) )

    Touch me! Would love an app that helped find the cheapest place to buy all the groceries on my list… and tell me if there are coupons out there too. I keep reading about these super coupon clippers who watch the ads… I tried this for the past 3 weeks and cannot seem to match any of my coupons up to the ads. I want to be a super coupon shopper!

    I don’t have an iphone, but I have a Palm Pre that I love. My fave app so far are some of the games… I love to play them when I have a few minutes waiting in line, etc.

    I don’t have an iphone, but if I did I think the app I would use most would involve a grocery list maker. I am constantly writing long lists of what I need then forgetting it when I go to the store…

    The magic iPhone app that I want is one that would blow dry my hair for me every morning. Since that most likely won’t happen, I do love leveler app that is always featured in the commercials!

    I don’t have an iphone yet but if I did my favorite app would definitely be the above mentioned Swedeshop app! I hate to admit this but I took my FIRST EVER trip to an IKEA store this weekend and LOST MY MIND! That app would most certainly help me pick out and buy cool stuff for my new house while staying within a budget that would make my hsuband happy. ;)

    I don’t have an iPhone or an iPodtouch, but I would love to have one so I could use the Sherwin Williams paint app. Point at the color you like, snap a pic, and the app identifies what Sherwin Williams paint color is closest. Awesome.

    I’d like a Quicken app that automagically updates my balance on both my desktop and iPhone. I’d like to enter a check into the app on my iPhone and have it show up in Quicken on the desktop computer. And when a deposit is entered on the desktop, it will show up on my iPhone. So I’d never have an excuse to not know how much money was in my account.

    Touch Me! I don’t have an iPhone or an iPodtouch, but I saw something on the Bump app where you exchange contact infomation by bumping the phones together. I thought that was pretty cool!

    TOUCH ME!!

    I’m “patiently” waiting for my new iphone (contract is up on Nov 5)
    In August I started using Evernote’s desktop program in preparation for iphone day and as a way to better organize all my billions of links and to do projects! AND as a way to organize the billions of recipes I had bookmarked assuming I’d go back and look for them! Now I’ve made a tenth of the recipes I’ve bookmarked and enjoy being able to assign tags and organize to my little hearts content!
    When I have my iphone (or this snazzy ipod touch) I will be able to look up recipes on the fly at the grocery store so that I can make sure I’m not missing ingredients!!
    In the spring I’ll be buying a pair of Nike+ shoes (or just the sensor and a pouch) so that I can track my runs and use it as a motivational tool!

    If I could design my dream app it would clean my house! And sleep train my toddler!

    My new favorite is Benjamin Moore’s “Color Capture” app. We’re in the process of choosing colors for our first home… so that one’s been getting quite a bit of use. :o)

    I don’t have an iPod touch, but I would love a miracle app that sorts all of the random tools in my kitchen and tells me which ones I need and which ones I need to toss. Or, you know, a real MIRACLE app that cleans the apartment for me. I can dream, right?

    Touch me… please.
    I need some sorta super budget tool. I’m so tired of adding up Lowes receipts on my solar calculator. It’s Fall in Upstate NY. There is no sun and that means a dead calculator half way through the stack. (PS… I know I could just make a spreadsheet… but my hubby thinks it’s dorky.)
