Fab Freebie: Ideas For Ikea

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – see who won below!***

Random.org has selected the two random folks who are about to get $100 to IKEA. And they are… Jennifer (who improves lives by teaching and will also be adopting a child from Ethiopia) and Ashley (who says needs some improvement for herself). Congrats!

If you take one thing away from this post, it should be this: two people are winning $100 gift cards to IKEA this week. Woot! But if you have room for a second thing, know that it’s because Ikea is hosting their second annual Life Improvement Project that, among other things (like hilariously helpful “instructions” for living a better life) includes another $100,000 Life Improvement Sabbatical Contest. So if you’ve got a great idea about how to help others, IKEA will give you one year and one hundred grand to make it happen. Last year’s winner (whose video can be seen here) was actually from right here in Virginia. Double woot!

Ikea Improvement Quiz

  • PRIZE: An $100 gift card to IKEA, courtesy of the IKEA Life Improvement Project
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IMPROVE ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …how you’d like to improve the lives of others. Do you have a special skill or talent that you could leverage? Or is there a specific cause or area of need that you’d like to dedicate yourself too?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 12 at 8pm EST (or at 10,000 entries)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The continental 48 United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perked for hosting this giveaway, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of IKEA Life Improvement Project

    IMPROVE ME

    Wow – 4000 people have already commented…

So I am going back to school to learn about sustainable landscape design. Since moving into a house built on the side of a more-than-gentle rise overlooking a creek (draining from a nearby golf course) on the edge of a (privately owned) wood, it has become painfully obvious that builders just don’t seem to think that much or that far ahead about drainage issues, not to mention waste water or other environmental impact issues. I really want to become expert in helping others to make improvements to their yards, whether established or during building, that identify and eliminate as many of these issues as possible. Ideally, a lot of water gardens and other things to help the indigenous flora and fauna will become not just trendy but commonplace.

Improve Me! We recently found out we’re expecting our first child and that has caused us to look at the way we live and try to be better people and parents for this new little munchkin. I want their new world to be warm and inviting so that baby can feel how much we love him or her.

This may not be an actual cause but it is what I am most passionate about right now.

I work with a group called Forward Controls. It’s kind of a play on words for those of you who are familiar with motorcycles and also the “Pay it forward” term. Some friends and I pick a cause every year and have a big motorcycle run to raise money for that cause. This mast year we helped out Matt Brown from Norwood, Ma who has been wheelchair bound since a high school hockey game accident. http://www.mattbrown3ride.com/

I’d love to have the time and means to research and lobby for longer standardized maternity and paternity leaves. As something recently near and dear to my heart, I think it’s a shame that new families are not better supported and able to bond. I don’t want to use this as a forum for my soapbox, so I’ll end it there and hope for an Ikea win!!

I’d develop a College 101 course for first-generation college-bound high school juniors and seniors so they get off on the right foot with no misunderstandings. Basic stuff like how financial aid works, where/how to buy books, how to use a syllabus- stuff that a lot of us took for granted since our parents who had been there before could guide us along the way. (And with leftover money, I’d buy a huge ranch with room for strays dogs to come and run instead of being kept in tiny cages all day. I heart me some pups.)
