PAINT ME A PICTURE so I can finally start decorating my new appartment here in Paris where we moved a few months back (from Canada)!

My favorite painting is from my painting teacher. It was a big piece in his studio, a student damaged it by accident, so the teacher reframed it much much smaller and I fell in love with it (I could then afford it since he prices his paintings by square inches!!!). It hangs in my foyer now, much safer!

My husband used to be an elementary school teacher before going back to school for educational research. One of his old students is still in middle school but is an extremely talented artist. Runs in the family, actually. =) We have literally commissioned a piece of art from her – a large sketch of one of our favorite photos from our wedding. Once we actually get around to hanging pictures in our new house, it will have a place of honor. =) Plus, she was just so cute and excited when we asked her! It was her ‘first paid job’ as an artist.

PAINT ME A PICTURE! I actually have a few original pieces, but my absolute favorite is a mixed media piece by Michael Matarese (http://sitekreator.com/michaelmatarese/index.html). I saw some of his work at an art show happy hour a few years ago and I was hooked. There’s so much simplicity and depth. I could just look at it for hours. Sw00n!!!

My favourite artwork is a square painting in blue-green hues that my parents own(ed). I love it so much I took a picture of it a few years ago and painted it in much smaller just for fun. When my parents visited us in our newly-built house in July, they came by car and brought me the original painting as a present :)

Of course I love the special pieces of art my boys make for me, especially the handprint one. My favorite piece of unique art, though, is a pastel of myself when I was pregnant with my first son. It was painted for me by my Aunt on a lazy art filled afternoon by a pond in RI. I actually had 4 of my aunts and uncles doing portraits of me, using different mediums that afternoon. It’s a wonderful memory.

What gorgeous saturated colours this artist uses. My favourite piece in our house has to be an oil portrait done of my Grandpa, by his sister, many years ago. It shows Gramp in his customary cowboy hat, and is, I think, his sister’s best work ever. I think love has a lot to do with the end result of an artist’s efforts. You can feel it with this painting.

Very cool to read everyone’s choices! Once again, thank you Sherry and John!

    PAINT ME A PICTURE!

I tried my hand at painting canvas with acrylics a few years ago. I spent a whole summer in recovery for an eating disorder and part of my therapy was to immerse myself in creativity. I had an amazing time experimenting with textures and colours in my parents’ back yard, but when I went back to school my work took over and I lost all motivation to paint. I gave away most of my paintings as presents but I’ve kept three and they’re hanging in my front room. They look really good but they are also a constant reminder of what I went through and how it made me the woman I am today.

My favourite bit of one-off art is actually two canvas paintings which I bought in Malawi, Africa last year. I was volunteering in an orphanage for babies who had lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. It was an incredible place, the people are an inspiration, they have so little yet they are so happy. It really made me appreciate all the more how lucky we are in the western world.

I found the canvas paintings on a street stall, painted by a local man, and they are simple silhouettes of an lady carrying a water pot on her head, but in beautiful purples, reds and oranges, really evocative of the amazing african sunset. Every time I look at them it takes me right back!
