Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My second name, Mary, belonged to my grandmother so it’s very special to me. We’re very similar and we’ve always said it must be the name, ‘Miss Mary, quite contrary’!

I’m named after the protagonist of the German movie “Marleneken”. My name is also a combination of the names “Marie” and “Lena”, which are both very popular in Germany.
Although most people mispronounce or misunderstand my name at first (because of its rareness), I really really like it!

Fabric Me! My middle name is more amusing – before I was born there was a TV show my older sister (5 y.o. at the time) loved, and she begged my parents to name me after the main character; they compromised in making that my middle name… and today my sister doesn’t even like the name! geez… :)

My mum was a Christian and the book of Ruth was the first book she read while pregnant with me. In the Bible, Ruth stuck with her mother (in-law) Naomi, and would not leave her. My mum is a single parent and we have been very close; 32 years later she is still my best friend! This is the reason I love my name :-)

My mom named me Amy at birth, but changed her mind 3 days later because she thought Amanda “was prettier”. As a kid, I wished she had left it at Amy, since Amanda was easy to make fun of (A-man-DUH lol)…but at 28, I can now say that I’m so glad she didn’t. :)
Now, please randomly draw my name as the winner, because I need to make curtains for two rooms in our house, and some cute things for our 2 month old baby girl. :)

I have three middle names: the first two are the names of my maternal great-grandmothers and the third is my Austrian grandmother’s maiden name. My mum didn’t agree to that last one, but that’s what happens when you send your husband off to register your baby I guess! She never did that again!

My name is fairly standard for when I was born (there were three of us in my class at secondary school), but I have been through three last names in my twenty-two short years on this planet, what with my mother’s divorce and remarriage and my recent nuptials! Let’s hope this one sticks!

My daughter, on the other hand, has a name from each side of her family. Her first name from mine, her middle from my husband’s.

“Lucy” means bringer of light. No special significance within my family exactly, as I may have randomly picked that name in kindergarten. It stuck around however as a decoy name for those who could not pronounce my real name– which is “agile waterlily”– of course it sounds prettier (and less literal) in Chinese!

I’m actually known by my middle name Louise, my parents choice, not mine. They decided I would not be able to live my life without a middle name!
I was actually nameless for about a week after I was born – my Dad had to work away, and so a name wasn’t chosen until he was back.
My great grandmother wanted me to be called some kind of old fashioned family name, and was so unimpressed by my name, that she called me ‘the little girl’ for at least three years!!

My name is Melanie, which means “dark one.” In college I went on an eyeglass-ministry trip to Madagascar. One of the men there (a seminary student who didn’t speak English) asked me my name through a translator, and then the two of them starting cracking up. When I asked what was so funny, they said, “Your name means black! And you are white!” :-)
