Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Born in the 80s, believe it or not I was supposed to be Roxanne. Yes…the song by the Police (thanks for that suggestion DAD!). According to my mum, when she saw me she claimed that I looked like and “Ashley” but wanted a different, more unique spelling.

Re: my goofy name! Ter’e. Gramatically, it is so incorrect. My parents lived in California and wanted something different. No, I am not French. no, the name is not French. And, no, my name is not Ter. I am just plain ole Terry, only mis-spelled! People either call me Tree or Ter.

FABRIC ME! My parents had just immigrated to Canada and decided that I should have an English name… not realizing that Peggy is actually a nickname for Margaret, they narrowed their choice to Peggy or Violet. My brother, who had also come to Canada with them, said that Violet sounded like a “spinster librarian” (sorry to all the Violets out there — it really is a pretty name) and hence, Peggy is was. Years later, when I was driving around Montreal with my brother, he looked at me and asked “Will you ever forgive me for suggesting that our parents name you Peggy?”. Ha! I don’t mind the name, just the grade school teachers who were convinced that it wasn’t my “real” name.

My name is Sabine and how I got my name is a bit of a dispute. My mother is German and she says the name is very traditional to Europeans. However, my Father is from Louisiana, and they have a Sabine River there. My mom despises LA so she wants nothing to do with it. As they were crossing the river, she says she remembered the name Sabine (pronounces SUB-BEAN-UH) and decided that was it. My father teases her by saying I was named after something in Louisiana and she always has a minor break down when arguing (in her very heavy accent) that it’s not true!
And no, I never wished I had a different name. I quite like it :)
P.S. I just started sewing so this giveaway is SOOOO up my alley!

Dad had agreed that if Mom would have another baby and it was a girl, she could name her Leslie Kay. Leslie was my Dad’s name and Kay was for Kathryn (My Mom’s name). Well, I was born and while Mom was still under (twilight sleep), he filled out the birth certificate Karen Renee. See, Dad didn’t like his name. I always went by Renee and like it. I did however name my second daughter Leslie Kathryn and he was thrilled. Go figure :)

He was able to chose that. Lots of family members with the middle name Vaughan! I love family names. My daughter’s first and middle name are after two great grandmother’s.

Funny story about my name. My legal first name is Catherine, which both my parents agreed on. My mom wanted my middle name to be Carson after her favorite aunt, and my Dad wanted my middle name to be Rose after his grandmother. My mother compromised with Rose (especially since she was the one pushing for Catherine), until my Dad didn’t show up to the fancy dinner hospitals give you after you’ve had a baby. Then she let the nurse name me! At the time, Princess Diana was very popular, so my middle name became Diane, and I was called Princess Di for quite some time.

I don’t know if it is coincidence, but my dad calls me “queenie” and Stephanie does come from the Greek work “crown.” Fitting I suppose. :)
