We were so lucky when we found our house! It was built in the 20s and was completely restored to our taste… all the way down to the paint colors. Now for furniture… I need some joss!

After a few of months of unemployment (and living with friends in a 2 bedroom condo), I got a job and we immediately searched for a house. Thankfully, our current home was the 6th (and final) house that we looked at and checked a TON of boxes: in ground pool, extremely quiet street, great location, fenced in back yard for our fur-babies, etc.

We did actually find our house the day it went on the market, but it was already under contract with a contingency. Luckily we had a great realtor who negotiated to be informed the moment the contingency offer fell through… and lucky for us IT FELL THROUGH!!! And we were able to swoop in and put the next offer in before the under contract status came off the listing.

Also, a friend was moving and gave us two chunky sea grass chairs for our living room (and they really set the feel for our decor in there).

7 days after we closed on our house, we had a nasty ice storm. We weren’t living in the house yet but we checked up on it every day between work and other obligations because we lost electricity for a week. What was unlucky was that we had a pipe burst and water started pouring through the ceiling. But what was incredibly LUCKY was that we happened to be there and could immediately tend to the problem.

We were very unlucky when it came to the process of buying our first home, but our one good luck moment was when we crossed our fingers and ripped up the thick, formerly bright now dirty green carpet that covered 70% of the house’s floors. We were THRILLED to discovery perfectly preserved hardwood floors underneath!

My luckiest home improvement moments happen when I’m able to see my old stuff with new eyes…moving things around, giving them a fresh coat of paint, or grouping them in new ways keeps my creativity high and my costs low.

Right about the time I closed on my house Target’s much-missed Global Bazaar section went on 75% off sale. I bought accent furniture for 3 stories, kitchen plates, bowls and serving dishes, wall decor and little cubby knick knacks for about a quarter of what they originally retailed for. I cleaned that place out! It was the best. I miss global bazaar.

My greatest find, took me over 20 years. I LOVE the 1950’s era for a kitchen. I have wanted, been searching for, the perfect, in good condition 1950’s chrome table and chairs. I scored one, at a little thrift store near us, for SIXTY NINE DOLLARS. A table, with fold out leaf, mother of pearl gray top and four chairs. The chairs have black seats and backs on them. The backs were in great condition. We had a lady from our church recover the seats in black. She did a fantastic job, they look original…….and I love it. I had ran across many tables and chairs in the past, but they were selling for a lot more money. Like 250.00 and not in as nice of shape as mine is. :-D *hubby on the other hand, has never gotten over the fact, that I gave our dining room table and six SOLID OAK chairs to our son and DIL. LOL You know, the table and chairs that everyone had in the 90’s. :-)
P.S. that nook in Clara’s closet is just perfect. I love your home.

Just buying my first house 2 months ago things have been hectic and there are so many things I have been doing to check things off my to do list! He decided my half dead grass needed a make over and OFFERED to do it! :) PERFECT! Love having great new green grass…now for keeping the dog off of it while it takes root…that’s a different story!

Joss me! I’ve actually been pretty unlucky, homewise. The house we chose had been on the market for two years when we saw it with no offers, but when we put one in, of course we ended up in a three-way competition. We did get the house, but missed the $8000 tax credit. My husband and I really like it there though, so I guess it’s ok ;)

My luckiest find is my dining room set. My parents found it on craigslist, from a woman that was moving her mother in law into a nursing home. She was so overwhelmed by having to get everything out of the house to sell it in time. My antique solid mahogany dining table (pre 1940’s), six chairs in great condition and buffet with lots of drawer and cabinet space were just $50!!! They also threw in a 1910 upright piano and antique dresser because they couldn’t get anyone else to buy and move them. All that stuff was an awesome deal!
