Our luckiest home improvement project to date was saving TONS of money on an electrician by learning to(very carefully) DIY-repair the electric line my boyfriend drilled through when hanging the TV. Whoops! Now we just need to fix that hole in the backside of the wall…

My luckiest home improvement moment thus far… was the amazing moroccan star light fixtures that we scored for absolutely free. I’d been coveting ones that cost hundreds and then my husband’s uncles announced they were clearing house in preparation for a big move — and if we could haul it away, it was ours to keep! They had not one but two of the star lights I’d been craving, plus we scored a ton of other useful stuff (power tools, adirondack chairs for the front porch, a grandfather clock… Out. Of. Control.)

JOSS ME! All of our luckiest home improvement moments were made possible by our wonderful neighbors who are always there to help us when we have, inevitably, taken on too much, or, you know, when water is leaking into the house at 3AM. Our house might not be perfect, but our neighborhood is nearly so.

JOSS ME! JOSS ME! JOSS ME! Please! My luckiest moment was when we completed our kitchen counter re-do. We had the ugliest avocado green laminate on the counters, but we were just starting out and couldn’t afford anything new. We decided to paint them with venetian plaster. When we finished burnishing them we used a restaurant grade clear epoxy. We are still getting compliments to this day and we did it all for less than $100.00!

I bought my house in 2008 from an elderly woman who was moving into a nursing home. She left all of her furniture and belongings in the house, and with it was an old Homart window fan from the 50’s in the original box with the manual and all parts. Sold that baby on eBay and paid for all of the materials needed to paint the interior of the house. Booyah!

Our luckiest home improvement moment was finding the perfect credenza to go in our living room. It needed to be a specific length and width and we finally thought that we would have to resort to something that was just good enough. When lo and behold I was looking through Craigslist one day and found a mid-century piece that was the perfect fit and full of class and character!! And best of all, it was under $100 and didn’t need one bit of refinishing!

I don’t think we’ve had anything lucky enough to be THE luckiest moment. I’ll save that distinction for something that will (hopefully) happen as we’re moving into & getting settled into our new apartment three weeks from now. Heck, winning this gift certificate might be THE moment!

I think my luckiest furnishing-related moment was when I realized that I really did like my fiance’s inherited bedroom furniture. It’s dark (real) wood, well-made and once I changed out the fading brass pulls and knobs for satin nickel ones, I realized we had some good pieces!

On vacation, I drove past a yard sale and spotted a mid century marvelous lounge chair, stopped abruptly, threw it in reverse, and nabbed it! THEN I was told I could have it for FREE! WHAT?! Forget about it- I strapped it to my car and drove the 2 hours home with a huge smile on my face!

    Who knew “joss” meant lucky??

We consider ourselves super, duper lucky because we found a house that we love right away in our search. We saw 3 houses in 2 days and knew we’d found “the one” as soon as we pulled up to the curb. Friends of ours searched and searched, went under contract multiple times, had issues come up in their home inspection or (gulp) after they’d moved in and we sailed through the whole process. We have been so lucky! Now… to tackle the ugly wallpaper and lilac bush sponge-painted bathroom…

I haven’t really had a lucky moment in home improvement but I’ve never once regretted the decision to have my fabulous neighbor make-over my living room. I painted, carpeted, and changed the lights. She and her mother scooted me out of the house for a morning and I returned to the best room ever!

My luckiest house moment lately actually was courtesy of Joss & Main. I’d been lusting after a particular lighting fixture for our dining room- I even mocked it up in inspiration boards for the room, and the day I was “accepted” as a member of Joss&Main, lo and behold my lighting fixture was on sale! I felt like the heavens had opened up.
