JOSS ME! Our luckiest home improvement project was actually in an apartment we rented. The landlord said we could do any improvments we wanted and she’d take the $$ off our rent (within reason of course) so we ripped up some ugly green, 70s carpet to find original hardwood floors underneath. This building was well over 100 years old so it was a fabulous discovery. A little sanding and stain made them oh so purdy :)

I had a jackpot score at a yard sale recently: I found a queen sleigh bed, Serta pillowtop mattress, huge, matching dresser and nightstand for $250. I was thrilled as I wanted a sleigh bed forever! Then I sold our furniture and made a little profit!

My luckiest home improvement was meeting my soon-to-be husband. His mom is the QUEEN of thrifting, craigslist, freecyle, yard sales etc. If our blender breaks or we decide to get a new patio set, she’ll find the perfect contender and have it in my possession usually within 48 hours. It’s pretty great cause I rarely have to buy things!

Luckiest deal was buying my husband’s boyhood home (from his parents, for a great deal!). And, rather than having parents that cringe every time we’ve made a change in “their” old home, they have cheered us along, often pitching in to help (my FIL is a retired contractor – best neighbor EVER!)- YES!

After being caretakers for a couple years, my husband and I got very lucky when we decided to start pinching our pennies and pay full rent for an apartment of our own in DC (which can be very pricey). The first place we looked at was just the right size, in the neighborhood we wanted, and had super-friendly landlords!

My luckiest DIY moment was being able to find and furnish (and paint and do projects for) my office space. Its the first room you see when coming in the front door so it was challenging to create an office/entryway/library that was functional and attractive but we did it. Now to use that gift card for the den…:)

My husband and I just purchased our dream home – at least to us it is! We are doing a total reno, walls, carpet, adding beams, fixtures… you name it, we’re doing it right now. It’s the most exciting time of my life (well, besides our wedding & the births of our children!)… I have so many projects to work on and furniture to refurbish, the list is endless but the outcome will be AMAZING. We def. recieved more bang for the buck with a foreclosure. <3

Luckily….we found our first house, but needed a corner piece for my husband’s computer. The day we said we needed one we decided to cruise around the neighborhood on bulk garbage day…lo and behold…voila!! Corner Secretary Desk. A bit of sanding…primer…and fresh coat of paint and our lucky find is ready for the big move.

I just had a JOSS ME lucky moment this weekend.

My dining room set was a hand me down from my grandparents, but not in an awesome antique way, more like in a falling apart, hazard to my children type of way. I had been looking for some new chairs at the very least and thought I could maybe rehab the rest of the set.

Instead I found a vintage 50’s dining room set that included a table, six chairs, buffet and china cabinet in near perfect condition for the unbelievable price of $300!

We’re about to move and will definitely be looking to score a deal on an awesome area rug. As for previous luck, my Mom passed along a dresser/desk set I’d always coveted, that turns out to have been made in 1900…by an undertaker, no less! Common practice in those days, apparently, and great (if ghoulish) character.

JOSS ME! One of my favorite lucky decorating moments was … when we were on our way to Ikea one day, we stopped at a thrift store to drop off some unwanted stuff from the move. We had planned to buy an entertainment unit at Ikea but we found an awesome one at the thrift store instead! After disassembling it and getting it in the car, we painted it, and now it looks great! Even less expensive than Ikea and more charming!

I think our luckiest moment was pulling out the old, icky carpet and finding the original hardwood floors underneath. We had no idea what we’d find since it was “buyer to inspect” so we lucked out! The 80 year old floors were even in really good condition.

My luckiest home improvement moment was finding a “garage sale” that lasted 6 months. A man’s mother had passed away and he was overwhelmed with her things. Everyday for 6 months he let me come over and sort through things and buy what I loved and could put in my home. He even delivered. He wanted to make sure his mother’s things continued to get the love she had given them…antique cabinets, coke crates, roseville pottery etc :) such a wonderful experience for him and myself.

Our luckiest moment was getting our dream house. We found it on the market but it was way out of our price range by nearly one hundred thousand dollars. We toured the house anyway, put in our laughably small offer, and went on our merry way. Three months later, the realtor called and said the house was in foreclosure and was available for the amount we offered. We moved in 1 month later!

My luckiest “home” project wasn’t a project at all – but this past weekend I found a green leather chair by Baker (complete with brass tacks!) for $200 at a flea market. It’s in near-perfect condition except there is just enough wear on it to look straight from Anthropologie. I have no idea where I’m going to put it, but I’ve already decided it was the best purchase ever. I found the same chair online for $5k. Big win for the home team!
