Sorry, I can’t post any other name now…

But seriously, JOSS ME! Pleeeeeeeeeeease! (Or, rather, random.org pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease!)

One of the coolest home improvement experiences I’ve ever had was in my childhood home, renovation c. 1996. My parents tore down 13 (no, that is not a typo) walls in an old 1856 house in Hudson, WI. What we found was amazing: back when the house was first being built, they used old newspapers and letters as insulation. Letters and newspapers in awesome condition from 1856! My favorite part as a young history buff was that the letters pre-dated the Civil War, and talked of what was happening and what might happen. So. Cool. We donated most of it to the local museum, but kept some of it. What could trump that for me now? :)

I guess the luckiest home-moment was that when we applied for our first apartment (with the nice wooden built-ins), we didn’t get it. However, the next year, when we were looking for an apartment again, the one we originally wanted was available, and we got it! Pretty exciting–we still love it two years later.

Best moment: First condo I looked at and LOVED, but way out of my $$$$ range, fell into my lap -after MONTHS of looking at other condos- by dropping drastically in price and then everything fell into place from there… <3 so lucky!

Joss me! My luckiest home improvement came after I removed an ENORMOUS ugly mirror which had been installed above my fireplace, so that I could prep and paint the walls to install the gorgeous, smaller mirror I got for Christmas. As I scraped off the hideous wallpaper that had been hiding behind the monstrosity, I wondered how much it was going to cost me to have an electrician come in to wire sconces over the fireplace…. Lo and behold. a few strips of wallpaper later, I found hidden intact electrical wiring that had been wallpapered over in exactly the right spots… SCORE!!

My luckiest home experience was purchasing my condo! I found it on the day the price was lowered $30K (which brought it into my super low budget). It was a short sale but I was able to move in withing three months after submitting my offer – which is pretty quickly from what I’ve heard. I love my condo and love decorating it even more!

As for house luck, on my first night in my rental townhouse a few years ago, I came across a teeny tiny baby lizard on my stairs (an anole — they’re common where I live). I shooed him out the front door, but I like to think that he was greeting me and wishing me good luck in my new place. Sounds so weird, I know, but I could either be totally creeped out by it or choose to believe what they say about lizards providing protection from unseen things! I went with the latter, of course.

Unfortunately, I can’t regale you with tales of awesome finds, or great renos or scoring huge on something, because a) our renos are always fraught with disaster, b) I search all the time and never can find that awesome piece with the campaign pulls for $20, like so many people I know, and finally, I never win anything, not even the bag of free groceries at Trader Joe’s! Hahaha! I would love to win this, so it is worth a shot!

One of my luckiest buys was a sweet and awesome red beaded (no not as cheese-tastic as it sounds) Pottery Barn lamp shade about 8 years ago at an after holiday sale for $9.99 (org $80!). It fit, and class-ed up, my Target Eiffel Tower lamp base perfectly.

I was coveting a snazzy duvet cover for months. Sadly, I didn’t purchase it as it was a wee bit out of my budget and it eventually went on sale and quickly sold out in the size I needed (Queen, apparently the most popular size in the world.) I proceeded to call every store within 500 miles and politely asked them to check the back room for any extra queens. After about 15 phone calls, I had one! And they shipped it FOR FREE! Woo!

It is one of my proudest home furnishing moments!

We just moved to NY from NC (yes, HUGE change). We were supposed to move into a 22nd floor apt. When we came to the city, they told us that our apt was no longer available, but a unit had opened up on the top floor (34th) and they weren’t going to increase our rent….how lucky did we get?! We have amazing views, SO much light and vaulted ceilings that make our tiny apt (compared to our previous ones in NC) sooo beautiful. LOVE IT!
