We just moved into our own place for the first time and I lucked into the most perfect armchair in the world from my grandmother’s store. She knew I had my eye on it and she hooked us up!

We won our house in a bidding war, but still got a mega steal. This allowed us to achieve our dream – owning our own house in Chicago! If that isn’t luck, I don’t know what is.

My luckiest moment in home ownership was when we were replacing the sliding glass door and realized that there were hardwood floors under the HIDEOUS blue carpet that ran through the whole house. As soon as we were done with the doors and windows, the carpet was unceremoniously ripped out and I spent a half day pulling the staples they used to secure the padding. That was a fantastic day.

JOSS ME! Our luckiest home-improvement-related moment was finding on Craigslist the exact Crate & Barrel coffee table we’d been eyeing the day before in the store… For a third of the price! And when we picked it up, there was a small scratch the seller hadn’t mentioned, so we got another twenty bucks knocked off the price. :)

I was a broke college student but looking for a table for my living room. I passed by this run down house that’s a constant garage sale and found this great old end table that I bought, cleaned, sanded down and stained all for less than $30. I almost cried when I had to give it away my senior year and made sure you tell the new owner, “take good care of her”.

I am working on a dresser for our bedroom. We inherited the piece from my MIL as she downsized. The dresser is an antique with great bones, but some cosmetic flaws. I am timid to paint pretty wood, but, lucky for me the dresser was already decoratively painted with cottagey vines and lattice (not exactly our style). It is in the process of getting “grayed” and I love it!

The day I “gave up” looking for our first home, my fiance and I drove by what now is our home we are living in, which had just been put on the market. We immediately called up our realtor and put in an offer that day (along with 7 other people). A few more weeks and we found out the 1950’s bungalow was ours!!!

I had been looking for an entertainment stand with drawers and glass doors and hadn’t had any luck. I went to a friends house one night and she had exactly what I had been looking for and it was from Wal-Mart of all places, their Better Homes and Garden line, and it was on sale! I went that night to go get it and it’s perfect and was cheap!

Finding and and purchasing our first home this spring was pure luck. We’d seen the home online and were underwhelmed by its photos, though it was in a fantastic location. On a whim, while we were touring other homes for sale in the area, we stopped at this home and were instantly charmed – it was adorable! The photos did it no justice. We drew up an offer the very next day, and it was accepted (well below asking price) three days later!

We were lucky that the previous owner of our 100 year house did his upgrades on top of the old details of our house, rather than taking them out completely. For example, he covered up two windows from the inside of the house, but left them intact on the outside. So we just had to cut holes in the inside to reveal them again.
