Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

We bought a king-size platform bed after more than a decade of sleeping on a hand-me-down poster queen that wasn’t our style at all. It totally makes our bedroom feel like “ours” finally and it’s the perfect size for everyone in the family (me, hubby, baby, and two fat cats) to relax together!

Our best peice is a vintage dresser that we bought for $80 at an antique store when our daughter was born. It was used as a napkin/silver holder for a lady that lived alone and sold to the store when she passed, PERFECT condition, solid wood, on beautiful claw casters and they thought our daughter was so cute, they threw in the $35 matching mirror for free :)

My favorite piece I own is a vintage buffet my mom found for me on craigslist. It’s this beautiful blonde wood cabinet from the 1940’s that has so much character, and it’s even more special because my mom got it for me because she thought I would like it- and I do!!

Furnish me! My favorite piece(s) would have to be my Pottery Barn bedroom set that I waited several years for because I was determined I could find something that I loved even more but that was way cheaper. I think that might have been a run-on sentence:)

I have two pieces that I absolutely love. One is a dresser that was once my grandmother’s and the second is a hutch that I found at a flea market and refinished it in a light baby blue.
Mandy says
“FURNISH ME!” My favorite piece of furniture is a chair that was handed down to me from my grandparents. We recently got it reupholstered and it looks fantastic! One of the best are parts…both of my babies have been rocked over and over in this hand-me-down chair, so the memories that are associated with the chair keep multiplying!
Caitlyn says
Furnish me! And it may not be the most beautiful piece of furniture or anything too special, but I love our leather sectional with the ottoman that pulls up- after the baby goes down to sleep we get to turn it into a big bed and snuggle in for tv together.
Emma says
FURNISH ME!
I’m a college student still moving to and from apartments and I HATE not having any furniture to call my own. Even though this furniture might have to go in storage for about a year until I move into a rental house it would be great to already have something to make it feel like mine.
My favorite piece I have now is really more of an accessory…I bought a tall, handmade mug in a glazed blue color at a local arts fair. It is super cute and is the perfect size for short flowers (I like anything big and white to make it look wider and keep the focus on the color and texture of the mug).
Pia Marie says
FURNISH ME!!!
My favorite piece I have right now is this Mexican side table/chest. I got it off craigslist form this guy that was selling all his stuff to move somewhere around the world (only in Austin), and I haven’t done one thing to it, and it’s GORGEOUS.
m&m says

FURNISH ME! What an awesome giveaway! My favorite piece that I own has to be the hutch that we recently acquired from my grandmother. It is a very old piece, which belonged to her aunt many years ago. I just love the look of it, and to think that it was in my grandma and grandpa’s living room when I was a kid, and now it is in mine is very special!
Jessica says
FURNISH ME!! I bought a dresser at a junk store.. It’s pertly done, we call her Ella. Am I the only one whoever names furniture? Not all, just the pieces I really like!
Kristen says

FURNISH ME!!!
The greatest piece we currently own is the dresser we bought for our baby, due at the end of August. We didn’t want a single use changing tale so decided to go the dresser route and attaché the chmaging pad to it. We wound up buying a 1950’s maple dresser that is perfect for the slight retro look we are going for for $150!!!
JMac says
Furnish me! I love a 4 poster bed that I found for a steal at a garage sale!
Sonya says
Furnish Me!
I have wanted a rolltop/hideaway writing desk since I was a teenager and I finally pulled the trigger after finding a beautiful, solid mahogany beast on craigslist. It has really pretty carvings on the front panels, secret drawers, and a chair that tucks in to the desk to make it look like a single chest of drawers.
Lesli Gresholdt says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece at the moment is a $35 Craig’s List farmhouse table that was unfinished and needed a little work. It was our first DIY furniture project and the outcome was so satisfying. A beautiful farmhouse table with white legs, a blue table top and only cost $50 total.

I don’t have any pieces that I love right now. We’re in the middle of building Ana White’s 20 Sec Tidy Up Trundle table so that’ll probably be my favorite when it’s done. Just as long as I don’t mess up the painting of the numbers!
Jessica R. says
Furnish me! My biggest splurge was on a gigantic leather sofa. I love it!
Emily says
Furnish me!!! I am moving into my first place on my own this week and so have been slowly redoing some furniture pieces. My favorite is an armchair I scored for free from some friends but had reupholstered in some fabric I love. It’s almost too lovely to sit in.
