Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece is rustic pine armoire which fell off a moving truck, our son’s boss gave to him after the mishap. He then asked if I could use it- I said yes of course, it held books and games next to the fireplace for a couple years. We moved to Arizona and it sits in our master bedroom- all I did was clean it up, the damage adds to the character and it would be lovely sitting next to the Hazel Settee.

I have a piece that I bought years ago at an antique shop. I originally purchased it as a TV stand. A couple years later it turned into a craft storage cabinet, and now it is getting a fresh coat of paint to be used as our changing table/dresser for our first child. Who know what it will be next!

furnish me! I have never thought about this before! I guess maybe my favorite piece is my kitchen table and chairs. They are an espresso color and ground the room. we have pine floors, doors, window casings and lots of windows. The table was exactly what the room needed to keep you feeling from floating away :).

My favorite piece is an old German clock we picked up at a yard sale. The sale was out in the middle of nowhere, and we felt like we had stumbled into the middle of a commune. However, the people were extremely kind, and now the clock brings back a funny memory.

We are still newlyweds so we’ve got a lot of mismatched pieces. I have to say that I really like our couch. It was a highly discounted piece from an Uncle who used to furnish model homes.. so it’s much nicer than what we would’ve been able to afford on our own. We could definitely use some new nice furniture! I would feel so grown up with all that beautiful furniture in my home! Thanks for the chance to win :) You guys are awesome.

One of my favorite home pieces is a beautiful MCM blonde desk that I got at an estate sale. I was pining over it, and when my mom and I left, I lamented that I should have got it since it was only $20. She said, “That was $200, not $20.” We made a bet – if it were $20, she’d buy it for me. We went back and GUESS WHO WON. Currently holds my baby blue Royal typewriter.

I found a beautifully, hand-crafted, wood dining table on craigslist. A furniture designer friend (the best kind!) had made it for this woman, but she didn’t have space in her apartment for it anymore with a baby on the way – she wanted it to go to a furniture/wood lover’s caring home…and boy did it find its match. I love the table!

FURNISH ME! (Please) Since you asked, our very favorite piece is our table. We found it in 1985 in a funky wear house in the mountains of the main island of The Philippines, in the city of Bagio. It lived with us through 22 years of international moves with 4 children and now thier tots. It is made of super-dense nara wood and just gets better with the generations. It was the best $25 we ever spent ( except for our marriage license, perhaps)
