Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish me! My husband and dad created a built in desk in our second bedroom when we found out our guest room/music studio was going to have to do triple duty as a baby room too. It looks awesome, and holds all of our books, stationary, computer, and music equipment out of the way of prying little fingers.

    FURNISH ME!

I found this amazing 60’s salmon-colored chesterfield at one of the Housing Works in NYC. Another woman was looking at it very intently, comparing color swatches and everything. I just stood back and casually looked at, never letting on that I was going to steal it right from under her nose! I called my husband and made him drive up our van. It was in our house later that night! I hope to have it forever.

I have a fabulous little red trunk I got from an antique shop before heading off to my first apartment my senior year in college. It routinely falls apart, but is the ost perfectly worn red color that I adore, and coordinates with everything beautifully. We use it as our living room coffee table and it’s perfect.

I love my IKEA sofa tables. I have a long wall in my family room and I bought two Hemnes sofa tables in that cool gray color. The two tables sitting next to each other look like one large piece. It looks great and offers some cool storage. Some people cannot believe that they are from IKEA. Why spend a lot when there are such affordable alternatives?

Furnish me. We love our kitchen table. We can take the leaves out and it seats four people (just right for us from day to day), but with the extra leaves in we can seat 8-10 adults comfortably, so it’s great for company too.

I love my silly Walmart desk (made by Better Homes and Gardens). It was discontinued, but was cute (and cheap) so I tracked it down on ebay. It came with broken pieces, but we managed to get it together- only to break it (and fix it again) during our last move. It’s still going strong!

When I was in college, I bought a 1926 Pooley radio cabinet (with all the radio workings already removed) at a yard sale for $15. Over the 25 years since then, it’s been a dresser, toy cupboard, sideboard, craft cupboard and now a dresser again. I love that cabinet. It has fabulous inlaid wood and great bones!

As far as favorite pieces, I’d have to say that my collection of art (prints, fine art, traditional art) from my travels are tops. I don’t have furniture really as I’ve been a Peace Corps Volunteer for three years and sold everything before joining. So when I say “furnish me, puh-lease,” I kinda mean it literally. :)
