Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece(s) of furniture we own are two night stands that belonged to my Great-Grandmother. I love having something of hers and when I look at them they are a reminder of her every night before I go to sleep.

FURNISH ME!
I love the midcentury dresser I found for free by the side of the road. It even still has its vintage paper drawer liners with various groovy flower prints. The woman who put it out on the curb said that her parents got it as part of a bedroom set when they got married in the 50’s! I only wish I had that rest of it. We use the dresser (sans mirro) as a sideboard in our dining room so it’s full of placemats and my daughter’s art supplies.

FURNISH ME!!
It’s a tie between my bed (sleigh bed, first furniture purchase ever!) and this library table my husband and I found at a second hand store. It stores our Keurig and spices on the top, cookbooks on the second section, and our toaster and panini press on the bottom. Best $25 ever!

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is a china cabinet from my grandmother. It’s a little different from my usual style – more modern with Asian-influenced lines – but the juxtaposition looks really striking and lovely with the curvy, cottage-style furniture in my breakfast room.

I have a monstrous wood desk given to me by an old boss. I hauled it across three states and back again when I attended graduate school. It’s giant and completely worn, but I love it.

Furnish Me! We found a beautiful dark walnut dining table for sale at Pier One with a 75% discount. I still cannot believe what a bargain it was and how much enjoyment we have sitting down to dinner.

FURNISH ME!
My “greatest piece” is an old piano bench that’s been in my family for ages. It’s not worth anything but the sentimental value is huge, and I always find a use for it no matter where I live.
Brenda says
Furnish me! As time marches on, I find the pieces that were the most expensive I like the least, probably because they’re now dated. I love several things I have bought on consignment or flea markets, and have changed by sanding, painting and adding new hardware. When it looks very little like the item I bought, I love it the most. Almost like I designed it myself.

Furnish me! … I love my pallet wooden headboard!!

FURNISH ME!!!!
My favorite piece is a dresser/buffet we picked up at a yard sale for $20. We painted it white and stained the top (took the idea from Clara’s dresser!). We get so many compliments on it and absolutely love it! It now serves as our entertainment center.

FURNISH ME! Whoa, what an awesome giveaway. I love my own Edand bed (aka Ed the Bed)… whose posts are still intact. It’s cozy in that cube.
Hannah C. says
Furnish Me! I think the greatest piece of furniture is the only piece in our whole apartment that we actually purchased. It’s a sideboard/buffet that we scored off of Craigslist for only $50! It seriously makes me happy. You can see it here set up in our dining room: http://www.figuringoutlifeblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/craigslist-score.html

My favorite piece is a two-shelf cabinet/bookshelf that my dad built with his dad in the 60’s. It has these great little angled legs and a new coat of paint really brought it up to date.
Colin says
FURNISH ME! (Please oh please. I’m workin’ with a grad student budget over here.)
My “greatest piece” is a knockoff Wassily Chair (the iconic Bauhaus-era design by Marcel Breuer) I found for $125 on Craigslist. The leather slings were replaced at some point in its life, and instead of the usual black, they’re this really nice dark gray-green. Totally “non-canon” for the chair, but I love it.
Ellen says
FURNISH ME! We have some hand-me-down bookshelves and a coffee table that are pretty sweet :) We gave them a fresh coat of paint and will keep them for a long while!
Megan Cuy Castellanos says
FURNISH ME!!! My best furniture price so far is a corner china hutch my grandmother gave me. It fits perfectly in the space we have and has just the right amount of storage for all my goods. I’m thinking about painting it someday, but we’ll see if I ever make up my mind. :)
Mary Mosley-Jensen says
FURNISH ME! I have a beautiful desk with cabriole legs that belonged to my great-grandmother. She was a seamstress and laid wedding dresses across it to do hand-beading on them. It’s my greatest piece because of its beauty and the family history. :)

My greatest piece of furniture would have to be…my bedroom set…My mom bought it for me when I started high school (I’m 27 now). It is all handmade from the Amish in PA, and each piece is signed and dated by the individual who made each piece.

Trissi V. says
FURNISH ME! Ugh this is a tough one I would say the prize piece would either be the credenza that I coveted for months at an antique shop (my sister got so tired of hearing about it she made me buy it) or the armoire I got off of Craigslist, its from the 20s but it looks like it could have come out of a Pottery Barn catalog today (minus the steep price, I love craigslist).
Karli says
Furnish Me! I came across an old desk that someone had picked up from the side of the road. I asked if I could have it since it was in storage…they obliged. I painted it this fabulous royal looking purple and never once regretted the decision!

My favorite piece of furniture that we own is a beautiful breakfront/china cabinet that I scored for $200 at a flea market. It’s solid mahogany that someone painted and distressed. I. Love. It. But who wouldn’t love more furniture!?!

FURNISH ME!
As a college student, I don’t have high design ambitions or a high budget. But, after diligently saving my wages from the TWO part time jobs I was working in addition to school, I decided that I could afford (and deserved!) to spend my money on something beautiful. I found a Restoration Hardware armchair and ottoman with the most gorgeous wooden legs. The chair is amazing and it’s something that will last until I’m retired!
