***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! And after having read some comments… It’s WROUGHT IRON, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!! Not “rot-iron!” Thanks for the laugh! Almost as good as thinking the French “Voilà” is spelled “Wallah.” Baha.
Anywhoo… My favorite piece…
Isn’t furniture. None of that is great. Besides, we’re selling it all to move to France! (If we win, my bestie is so getting some good stuff.) But when we got married, (not my bestie, my hubby and I) a lot of our college friends could only afford the cheap-o stuff, so we wound up with bamboo. Lots of bamboo. Bamboo matts, bamboo spoons, bamboo bowls, bamboo spatulas, 2 bamboo silverware dividers… So what’s a girl going to do other than use one of them as a silverware divider, and the other as a tiny mounted mudroom?!?!?!? That’s right. I painted it black, lined the back with black and white damask scrapbook paper, and inserted hooks and hung it on the wall. Now it holds wallets, sunglasses, keys and umbrellas in the foyer of our apartment. Oh yesh. So, not furniture, but if it were huge it would be an entire mudroom… which counts, right?!?!?!? I never win these things so it doesn’t matter anyway haha but I’ll keep trying!

FURNISH ME! My best piece of furniture is a large cedar chest I inherited from my great grandmother. It’s showing some wear over the years, and someday I will figure out what to DIY do to it to make it mine!

FURNISH ME!!!!!
We have a dining room table and chairs that are a hand me down from the 60’s- it’s vintage diner style with the chrome legs and all!!! I am very protective of it, and freak out if people lean back in the chairs on the back legs :). I see the sette is called “Hazel”- and i think i should win b/c my daughter’s name is Hazel!!!!

FURNIISH ME!
Please, please, please!
I have a great little red leather arm chair that I inherited from my grandmother. It doesn’t have any worldly value, but I love the chair. In a world of large, overstuffed everything, it is petit and clean-lined. The leather is a deep red with brown undertones and wood stained legs. I just love it.

Oh, definitely an ornate table my parents picked up at a garage sale and never redid… I still need to strip it and paint it, but when that happens, it will be the perfect piece!
Kim says
FURNISH ME!! I love that settee. It would look great in my kitchen.

FURNISH ME!
The greatest piece of furniture I own is a mahogany wood trunk I use as an accent piece in my living room. It was my grandmother’s in the Philippines, with hand-carved designs and is absolutely beautiful. It holds so much meaning because most of the heirlooms I’ve inherited from her were stolen in a house robbery, and this is one of the few that remains. It will forever stay within my family, and inside the trunk I actually use it to store blankets (some of which she has sewn for me when I was a baby!)
Courtney says
Furnish Me! My favourite item is a wooden “ice chest” that we inherited from my grandparents that was my toy chest growing up and is now my daughter’s. Not only is it my most sentimental piece, but it is the one design element that always inspires interesting conversation when we have guests.
Kelly says
Furnish me! I think my favorite new piece will be this mid century buffet that I am picking up from Craiglist tomorrow!

OMG, FURNISH ME! PLEASE! What gorgeous giveaways!
I am proud to say that nearly every piece of furniture in our home is secondhand – either from a relative, yard sale, thrift store or vintage shop.
Greatest piece, huh? I think I will go with: a living room table set (coffee table + 2 matching side tables) we picked up for $35 from our neighbor’s yard sale when he was moving out. He said his parents got the set when he was in high school (the 1960s). Truly mid-century modern, & high-quality too! We couldn’t believe our luck. We promised to take care of them for as long as he owned them.
Laura says
FURNISH ME! I love my new Crate and Barrel bed.
Cathy says
The greatest piece we own is our mule chest! My in-laws gave us our bedroom furniture as a wedding present and the mule chest is our favorite part of the set. We love how huge and versatile it is, not to mention the beautiful cherry that it’s made out of.

Furnish Me!!
I have my dresser from when I was a baby, my mom passed away and unfortunately I don’t have any other furniture from our house. This dresser still looks nice, but I’m planning on painting it pink and gold or teal and red when I have a daughter or son of my own (probably another couple years away).
Thanks!

FURNISH ME!
We’re new, first-time homeowners so we don’t have much “real” furniture. However, we found a great little solid wood dining table with a sliding leaf functionality that we sanded down and refinished. It cost us all of $50, including the makeover. <3
Jen G. says
FURNISH ME! Wow — what an amazing giveaway! One of my fave items in our house is a beat-up, metal beach sign from the 70s that I scored for $20 :)

Furnish Me!
The best piece we “own” is not yet in our house, but it is a desk that my grandfather made for my grandmother while they were married. She recently passed away, so it is being handed down to us. It is not the most beautiful desk in the world, but it is to me, because it has such a significant history behind it!
Amanda says
FURNISH ME!
Most of our furniture is just Ikea or Target. It looks okay, but it’s not high quality by any means. We did just inherit a cool, real solid wood coffee table from my grandparents, though, and I’m excited to fix it up!
