Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!!!
My favorite piece of furniture is a 3 legged stool that I picked up somewhere along the way. the carving in the seat and legs is so intricate you can get lost in the details, it’s gorgeous!!! it is low to the ground and doesn’t hold a lot of weight, so it’s more decorative than functional, but it makes me smile every time I pass by it, so it stays!!
Ursula says
Furnish Me! I love the desk I use for a vanity from my Grandfather who said it was my great grandmother’s from Germany!

FURNISH ME!
My best find was when my boyfriend’s mom was moving into her house. The previous owners were mostly moved out but there were a few pieces of furniture still remaining (they moved down the block). There was this gorgeous mid-century dresser I asked about and it turns out they were going to give it to goodwill! The lady was super nice and said I could have it. =)

Furnish me!!!!
My favorite piece of furniture we own is an old vintage dresser that I found sporting a free sign in someone’s yard last summer! I refinished it, put it in our bedroom, and then spray painted the mirror that went with it, and hung that above our fireplace!! A nice old sturdy dresser is hard to come by, I know my husband and I will keep it around forever! :)
Becky says
Furnish Me! I love my expensive mattress.
Kelsey says
FURNISH ME (please)!!! I refinished two antique pieces from my family’s furniture business (as a refresher after doing a MA dissertation), and I love them! For practical purposes, however, my greatest piece(s) are two classic oak bookshelves – I have so many books!!!

That book looks so interesting; I would love to win a copy. My favorite piece is an antique marble coffee table that I found at a consignment store. My husband and refinished it and we love the way it adds a personal touch to our living room (it looks pretty great too).

I absolutely love a used wooden desk that we found at a local store for $70. We have to still refinish the desk, but it’s got nice angles and will work very well for a changing table and then later desk in the small bedroom we have set aside for a nursery. I love that it will serve more than one purpose.
Ashley says
FURNISH ME! I have a couple of parsons chairs that create a nice little seating area in the end of my long and awkwardly shaped living room. They were a birthday gift from my husband and I love them!
Hannah says

Amy says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is currently an adorable little sitting stool that is DYING to be painted a fun, bright color- it has to wait though, because we just moved into the house and are still choosing colors :)

FURNISH ME!!
I have two pieces that I absolutely love. The first is a table that came from my great grandfather. It has a wood base and a marble slab for the top. The wood finish has distressed over the years and it’s gorgeous. The second is a metal bookcase with sliding glass doors that my mother got me when the cotton mill that she worked in for years closed down. The metal has a beautiful patina and there’s no telling how old it is!
Julie says
FURNISH ME! Heaven knows I could use some more good furniture :) I love…a neat reddish side table with a lot of depth to the grain. It is a touch rusticbut modern lines.
Robynn says
Furnish Me! My favorite furniture we own is our coffee table set. We scored a really nice one at a garage sale.

Ashleigh L says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I own is a door that was original to our 100-year-old house. My dad stripped the years of old paint, replaced some damaged wood pieces, and stained it to match perfectly with our decor. And my mother-in-law found a great antique doorknob to go with it!
Erin says
FURNISH ME! the greatest piece in our new home is the coffee table my fiancee made in highschool woodshop class. it is beautiful and you would never know it was made by a kid!

FURNISH ME!
My best piece of furniture is actually being built right now… Antique legs from a shop in New Orleans, a piece of Carrara marble from my childhood home, and old barn wood as the apron. It’s going to be the coffee table of my dreams!
Rachel says
FURNISH ME! I inherited this awesome mid century Danish modern chair. Love it!
Amy says
FURNISH ME…PLEASE!
Our greatest piece is a two door, glass front book case. It belonged to my husband’s grandmother and it really is a classic piece. I’ve lined the glass with a gauzy, creamy, embroidered fabric which gives it a different twist and allows me to store “stuff” inside without seeing all those odd and ends from the living room.
Julie says
Furnish me! Our house could sure use some more pieces, especially good pieces.
Cindi says
FURNISH ME! I think my favorite piece is a heavy old oak sideboard. It is just such a workhorse, holds tons and actualy works in several different rooms. My husband and I bought is 25 years ago when I was pregnant with our daughter.
Hallie says
FURNISH ME!
My file cabinet. I know, I know, but we spent a lot on a good quality, good-looking file cabinet.
If we win, I’ll let you see inside my drawers ;)
Cheryl says
FURNISH ME!!
A framed print of french cycling poster. . . ties colors together in living room. It is large and makes quite a statement behind our couch.
Emily says
Please FURNISH ME!!!
I actually have two killer pieces with sentimental value that I’d be torn between should the house ever catch on fire. The first is an etching of our yellow lab that I had commissioned for my husband’s wedding gift. We haven’t yet been blessed with children and she is our mutual rock. I know that whatever craziness happens at work that I get to return home to my hubby and my sweet girl dog.
My second piece is my great great grandmother’s cherry bed that my late uncle refinished. It’s stunning! Its an odd size…actually between a full and queen which required a custom made mattress that weighs a ton. I guess I’d rescue the portrait by default ;)

“FURNISH ME!”
My favorite piece of furniture is our bed. We splurged and bought a king-sized pillowtop bed when we got married and are SO glad we did. Our frame is the black/brown Ikea Hemnes, which was suuuper affordable and our mattress was the real splurge. We love how the frame looks and how inexpensive it was, and we can’t get enough of that mattress…
Alaina says
FURNISH ME!!
Our giant sectional. It’s huge and comfy.

Furnish Me, please!
I am the lucky owner of a number of fab hand-me-downs! And we’ve purchased a few pieces of our own furniture as well. Some of the items we bought are disappearing with my kids as they fly off to feather their own nests. I must share my two favorites – my mom’s baby grand piano, the one she learned to play when she was a kid. And my nana’s kidney shaped desk. I love them both and can’t imagine ever parting with either one – this side of the grave.

Furnish Me!
I have a vintage 70’s sideboard with diamond accents and triangle legs. We use it as an entertainment holder and it is my second love after my husband.

Furnish me!
I treasure my great-grandmother’s antique Singer sewing machine. It looks like a beautiful table, but the top opens and you can lift out this VERY HEAVY iron sewing machine. The drawers even hold some of her thread still. I never knew her, but it’s nice to feel a connection to her.
Ally says
FURNISH ME! I found a spanish-style buffet, that no longer had the dining table with it, at Liquidation World. It’s the neatest piece, because of it’s unique look it can go anywhere in my house and it stores everything and anything. I’ll never get rid of it.

FURNISH ME!!!!! Please!
