***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!
Many years ago I spied a Thomas O’Brian gorgeous two-toned wood side table on clearance at Target. At something like $50 it was still a bit steep for my grad school budget but it’s mid-century lines spoke to me. Six years late it still has pride of place in our living room, along with a beautiful lamp I also scored for a steal.

I am in the process of refinishing an old church pew that was going to be thrown out from a local school that is being remodeled. It had at least 6 different layers of paint on it but is going to be beautiful when I’m done with it!

My favorite piece of furniture is a buffet I found at a local vintage furniture shop. (It actually looks very similar to the piece you just purchased.) I’m smitten with its roughed-up robin’s egg blue paint color, and I love how versatile it is!

We picked up a fantastic drop leaf table off of craigslist. It gets small enough to be a thin buffet along the wall and becomes large enough to seat 12 for dinner.

I have an old wooden bench that was in my grandmother’s family for generations. I always wanted it as a kid and sometimes I still can’t believe it’s mine now. :) We have to keep it in our bedroom though, b/c I have two little boys who I fear would somehow ruin it. I can’t wait to display it somewhere more prominent down the road.

FURNISH ME…please :). Currently we don’t own any furniture that I am in totally and completely in love with BUT I do have a huge oil painting that my grandmother left me. She bought in the early 80’s at the Eastern Market in DC because it made her think my sister and I. It is by far the greatest piece I own and everyone always comments on it; I love it because every time I look at it I think of her.

I have a vanity that was my great-grandmothers. It’s been refinished and damaged over the years but I love it anyway. Something old in every room right?

FURNISH ME! Currently, I’d say the best piece we have is a hepplewhite style sideboard that I refinished last year. It gives the room an eclectic look against our new straight lined furniture. http://www.diylearningcurve.com/2011/09/the-project-that-started-it-all/

There are several pieces that I would probably risk a house fire to save – I’m trying to only buy things that I truly love. My latest love are two chairs I recovered in leopard print fabric – they make me happy every time I see them.

My favorite piece of furniture is a dresser that has been handed down from my grandmother to my mother to me and soon to my children. It has never been painted or re-finished and every knick and scratch tells a story! I absolutely love it!

I think my Number One piece at the moment is this dresser I just refinished for my son’s room. Blue wood stain and exhaustively hand-painting a huge map!

I have a hall-tree that was in my house where I grew up and my Mom passed it on to me. I think it would look good with a fresh coat of paint to make it more modern but I am afraid if I change it too much, it will not remind me of my childhood.

My favorite piece is a six drawer dresser I found at Goodwill. It had great bones but had been painted hot pink at one point. Who ever owned it tried to paint over the pink with cream but the paint didn’t really cover the hot pink very well. Plus it had plastic knobs with roses on them. It was a disaster!
Anyhoo, I painted it black and switched out the hardware and it is gorgeous now!
Robin says
FURNISH ME!! This book looks so great, I can’t wait to check it out. I think my greatest piece (or at least it’s my most beloved material object) is my quilt from Anthropologie. The Laelia quilt. I had been pining for it for months (years!?) and my wonderful boyfriend knew it. I opened my presents one Christmas morning, and was very happy with everything I got. He let me enjoy my presents for a few hours then made me “get something” from the storage ottoman in our living room. I opened it and I found the most beautiful, soft quilt I had ever seen. Apparently he had gotten a bonus, just enough to buy the quilt!
He works overnight so he’s not able to be home with me at night, and I feel like I’m wrapped in a warm hug every night. It was a very good gift. He is the greatest!
