***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I have a lovely dresser that I got for $35 at a used furniture store – $20 worth of hardware later, I have a piece that will last me forever! (It totally makes up for the horrendous hand-me-down pastel floral ruffle couch I’m suffering through – so grateful for free furniture, but kinda ready for an upgrade!)

The best piece I currently own is a giant 5′ tall wood-framed mirror on a hinged stand. It was my great-great-grandmother’s and I LOVE it! Currently it is painted a metallic greeny-gold color, but it has seen many years and many colors. I love sentimental family pieces, and this one will stay with me for many many years. =)

My entire house is Ikea or random pieces, so I can’t easily answer this. Unless we count outside furniture? I really love what I bought to go on my concrete slab outside and got a great deal too!
Sara says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece right now is my no-sew curtains I made using the YHL tutorial. Do curtains count? If no, then… my kitchen table. It’s tall and black and takes care of the “every room should have something black” thing. ha :)

FURNISH ME! We have a great coffee table we’d originally seen at Crate & Barrel for WAY out of our price range… We set up an RSS feed from craigslist with the name of the table… waiting a month or two… then grabbed one that popped up – in great condition for less than half the original price! We get compliments on it all the time.

I don’t have much in my house that wasn’t a hand-me-down… A neighbor gave me a wood desk for free. It has neat curvy lines. At first I was being nice by accepting it, but once it was in the house I really liked it.

Furnish me! This would be my favorite giveaway! My best find…ohhhh… Hard to choose. I found a China cabinet thing from World Market that I love– everyone thinks that it is an antique. I also love a thrifted dresser that I’ve painted twice… Both items were super deals (coupons on top of sales at World Market and sale day at the thrift store).

My favorite piece is a custom made sectional that was a gift from my stepmom when I got married. She and my dad had it made for them. When he passed away and she down sized her house, she gave us the couch. It is a huge down sectional that fit perfectly in our living room. It almost seems like it was made for us and it is a great memory of time spent lounging around with my dad.

I found an antique dresser on the side of the road. I painted it a bright coral color that was also in a rug across the room. Then I added some fun glass knobs. It’s a great mix of modern and antique.

I think my best piece of furniture is the dining table that I am currently working on. It’s been snagged by my husband for the game room though, but I really want to paint the legs turquoise and put it in my studio….
My other favorite piece was a 1950s buffet that I found at St. Vinnies. It was lovely as a TV stand, but then we got rid of our TV, so we’re trying to sell the buffet now. I’ll have a new beautiful piece soon!
