Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! My favorite pieces of furniture are actually two solid wood bedside tables that my grandfather built many, many years ago. He was a master carpenter and did everything by hand. They could use some refinishing-love, but they are still stunning.

    Furnish Me!

My best piece would be a $30 chair I bought off of craigslist which was in mint condition. I use it in my office/guest bedroom and re-upholstered it with beautiful fabric for $4 to work with the colors in the room. I love it because it’s really pretty, comfortable and I use it EVERY day since I work from home. Definitely the best $34 total I’ve spend in a long time! :)

I saw the cover of this book somewhere recently and was intrigued by it! I love the idea of the 7 essential pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

I think my current favorite is a piece that still needs a makeover. It’s an ancient telephone chair that my dad remembers playing on at his grandmother’s house. We thought it was long gone, but discovered it when his mother died. Can’t wait to spruce it up with some paint and love!

Second place might be the linen dress form I got for Christmas last year. Her name is Gladys (named after Phoebe’s scary “art” on Friends!) and she likes to wear my scarves and jewelry to coordinate with seasons/holidays. I’m such a nerd.

FURNISH ME!!!! My most beloved piece of furniture is my grandfather clock. I lived with my maternal grandparents for almost 8 years, and during that time, my grandfather made 3 grandfather clocks. My uncle got one, my mother got one, and I got one! We just lived through devastating wildfires here in Colorado Springs, and I knew that if I had to evacuate, that clock was coming with me.

I bought an Erin chair from Cost Plus World Market before moving into our first house and used it to choose all the houses paint colors based on the upholstery. I love the chair so much I positioned it to be the first thing you see when you walk into my house. It’s also one of the only pieces of furniture that we’ve ever purchased new. (everything else is hand-me-down or craigslist :)

I love this 1930s settee I picked up at a consignment store. It has beautiful curves, and the fabric is still in great shape! As we have just purchased our first home, my husband and I are trying to save for pieces with “Good Bones” rather then buy all cheap furniture just to fill the house, One piece down :)

My real first piece of furniture was a dresser, I love it’s simplicity, I’ve painted it twice over the last few years, each time for each different room. Now it’s a nursery dresser. I love it, and will always revamp it up for future use!

FURNISH ME!!! My greatest ‘piece’ is a chunky old square coffee table with a herringbone parquet top. It was falling apart when we bought it in college (for $10), but after tons of white paint and a few screws, it’s still going strong. Most importantly, it’s been with us through our first 4 homes, the first 7 years of our marriage, and countless of good times. It’s actually now on loan to my dad and step-mom who loved it so much that they offered us a super nice set of living room furniture if we would be willing to swap for a while!

My best piece of furniture by far is a leather chair and ottoman that was given to me in college. My friends mother was in upholstery school, needed a project and was recovering my couch for me. Her instructor gave her some leather pieces and a frame… And she called to ask if she could make me a leather chair and ottoman too. Um, yes please. I have not always lived in places with enough space for this beauty but have always made it work.
