Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!!! When I was about 5 years into my career I decided to pick up and move from the NY Metro to Colorado. With housing FAR less in CO than NY, I was able to finally buy nice furniture. I started with a bedroom set from Pier 1. When I met my husband years later and we did the dance of what stays and what goes, I fought hard for my bedroom set. I didn’t realize it until that moment, but it had come to symbolize the person I had become in moving to Colorado and taking that leap of faith.

Furnish me! I think our favorite piece is the old rocker that my husband bought on his own (exceedingly rare — the shopping, not the rocker), which was rickety and the upholstery was torn. I had it refinished and reupholstered for our anniversary!

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite pieces are all CraigsList finds. A beautiful mid century dresser we use as a changing table in our bedroom, an old piano that someone disembowelled and took the keys out of, turning it into a desk …oh, and also the sewing table my spouse built me.

FURNISH ME! — When my husband and I bought our house, we splurged on a side board from an antique inn in Charlottesville. It is such a perfect perfect piece for our house. The angled black marble top; the elegant legs give it a lightness. And the dimensions are exactly what the room called for. Now, if I can just get my hands on that gorgeous settee and Cadman chair……

I have a vintage metal nurse’s desk. The thing weighs a TON! My strong moving buddies have threatened to leave it behind if I move again. I see so much potential in it – I just need to figure out how to incorporate it into my décor.

Honestly, my greatest piece right now is our IKEA KIVIK couch. Not because it’s the fanciest couch in the whole world, but because buying it last month means we actually HAVE A COUCH for the first time in three years!! YAY for finally living in our living room!

My biggest splurge, which wasn’t that BIG, was on our dining room table and chairs set. I found a great Black Friday deal at JCPennys. Most everything else I own is either hand-me-down, from a garage sale, or bought on clearance at a big retailer.

FURNISH ME! I have a Moore machinist cabinet that my dad rescued from an old machine shop and was going to use in his shop. I insisted that it was too nice to be covered in metal and grease and it is now a great piece in my dining room that gets loads of comments from guests.

Even though it has been in storage for almost 4 years,(because we moved from MN to FL)I am looking forward to rocking in that chair with her again really soon!!!!

Furnish Me!!! I have two pieces that I am most proud of. One is a perfect grey tailored sectional with a menswear fabric, it was a major splurge, but so worth it. The second piece is a wood chest of drawers on casters that I found at an antique store for $75 – it was exactly what I was looking for when I was shopping that day!

Furnish Me!! I love my sectional sofa because it was the first piece of furniture I bought for my first (and current) house. It’s just a microfiber one from rooms to go but as a single mom signing on the dotted line for my first mortgage, all I could think about was cuddling up for movie night with my little man in our own home. Two years later it’s a little worn but we still love it!

FURNISH ME! Love, love, love my mid- century credenza! It’s the first thing you see when you walk through the front door, completely scratched and missing some veneer, but it came from the basement (left by previous owners) of our first home, so it not only is a style I love, but reminds me of so many firsts – home ownership, marriage, baby… Makes me so happy!
