Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

I think my current best piece is my bed–a reproduction Jenny Lind that is so high that we have a littles stepstool by it, even though it only has a half-size box spring under the mattress! My parents bought it for me when I was 16 and I STILL love it, 16 years later. :)

My grandmother’s antique side table. It’s actually a little big for our space but it reminds me of her every time I pass by it and the happy memories associated with it.

“FURNISH ME!” the “greatest piece” we currently own? funny b/c we recently took a survey of our home and realized we only had one piece of furniture that is actually NEW – and it’s actually a dresser from the PB outlet, so hardly counts. Greatest piece(s) would have to be our teak table and chairs and armoire/bureau that holds our TV. We got these steals when we were searching for our first home. the owner was selling her furniture too and we snagged it up (didn’t end up buying that house, but funny enough our best friends actually bought it.)

I found a set of 2 campaign dressers on craigslist recently. Luck + $15 and $30, paint and sweat I got two beautiful navy campaign dressers. I also love my upholstered headboard that I made and covered with a $15 Ralph Lauren sheet from home goods!

I have this great low, long mid century couch that I adore, but it has a horrid print on the upholstery. I’ve lived with it for years because the couch is AWESOME, in great shape, super comfy, and we got it for $50 at our local Goodwill. One day I’ll work up the nerve to reupholster it, or throw gobs of $$$ at it to have it professionally done. Until then I’ll enjoy the lovely straight lines and squint a bit to make the print not so bad.

    FURNISH ME!!!

I think my favorite piece of furniture is a little side table we picked up (on our 1st Anniversary trip to the beach!) from this amazingly junky beach thrift store. It was literally a bunch of makeshifts sheds in a circle. We walked around admiring the art and things, not really looking for something. This little table was the greatest, stormy shade of blue. We snagged it up for $10. A much better souvenir than, say, a tee shirt or fridge magnet.

FURNISH ME! because my husband is a medical student and we are in desperate need to replace our two trash to treasure dressers. Favorite piece ever is the headboard the hubs made for us and we stained together. It reminds me of what a renaissance man he is, smart and handy. I am so proud.

I found this amazing mirror at a local thrift store that is from the early 1900’s. I oogled it for MONTHS because it was a little over my price range, but finally saw that it went on sale (and talked the lady down a little more!) and brought that baby home! I LOVE IT!

    “FURNISH ME!”

Our teacher’s desk and chair from the 1950’s. My mother-in-law saved it from her school. They had plans to saw it in half and throw it out!! We’ve since refinished it a darker color and my husband spent many nights studying at it during his law school days.

    FURNISH ME!

I’m totally crushing on this new (well new to me) mid-century dresser that my boyfriend and I found at a local thrift store. Thanks to your DIY skills with Clara’s dresser, we are using your experience as a MAJOR bouncing off point and started refinishing it. We are also repurposing it as a buffet for our dining room! Super exciting stuff. It’s our first major DIY project. I suppose I’m quite sweet on this piece because we’re fixin’ her up together as a team project. And I know I’ll feel even more stoked when she’s finished and sitting pretty in our dining room for us to Ooo and Ahh over and impress our guests…and quite possibly our cats. ;)

The best piece of furniture I own is a square farmhouse table I built. It was the first thing I ever made from the ground up and it cost me a lot of sweat, tears, and several coats of paint. But it’s my absolute favorite piece.

we have a bbbbooooootttttiiifffooollll armoire that we got for less than half retail at a second-hand shop in totally awesome condition. It feels like grown-up furniture, but it’s got dents & holes built into it, so it’s not “precious”–i think it’ll be super versatile in our home(s) for many decades.
